Puggo Strikes Back (PSB). The Super 8 doesn’t have this scene. The 16mm has this scene, but I can’t figure out how to post the image. Apparently I’m more stupid than I realized. LOL

That’s okay, just tell us if it’s reddish, and that’s good. If so, chalk another one up for Puggo!

It has an orange glow to the lighting on the back walls, but the Bacta Tank is blue.

I have a Super8 of ESB, it looks the same as the 35mm, just not quite as intense colour.

The frame I am most curious about is the one where Luke is recovering inside the bacta tank with Han, Leia, Chewie and 3PO watching. That scene looks so different from one edition to another that I don’t know which one is the correct one.

This shot?

(Note this isn’t from the print, I just want to clarify which shot you mean.)

Yes poita, that’s the one.

Cool. I posted the image from the print a page back or so.
The actual look isn’t quite as red as in the picture, the Bacta tank is more blue than it looks in that shot, but the background is quite red in reality, it is the same on the Super8 I have which is from the French release of ESB, so originally, the scene was nothing like the Blu-ray.

So the Bacta tank used to more clearly be a toaster oven, then. Very 1980.

You know, I think you are right.
They did utilise a lot of “found objects” during the production, and I think I have identified the source of the Bacta Tank.

It looks like a Black & Decker Spacemaster.

In just three minutes, we will all be enjoying hot jedi toasties!

Yay!

If my experience with toaster ovens means anything, Han, Leia and Threepio are the ones at the highest risk of being toasted. Luke will come out vaguely warm.

Perhaps even… Luke warm.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

groans well played… well played indeed…

That would explain why Luke’s legs have a cast of red colour, even on the Blu-ray

His Dudeness, between you and TN1, these are the most exciting developments in Star Wars these days… Actually Film in general!

Can you clear up some confusion? There are comparison videos on Youtube - ie your UK scan and German scan vs the current Grindhouse. Which print is your latest and how does it compare to all previous?

I guess I’m hoping there’s enough to put together a technicolor quality version…

Also, when you let your’s out in the wild, will you do a Grindhouse version? For me the holy trilogy has always been getting a set of scans from quality prints with most dirt washed off etc… Then the only digital cleanup being basic colour correction to counteract print fade, and removal of repetitive damage.

From that as a basic reference I think anyone can do their own version to suit taste/remove damage, grain, gate weave etc…

I can attest to having people blown away by the ROTJ Grindhouse - Star Wars newbies really appreciate the authenticity of an old film print showing how great the movies were originally… There’s a certain freshness to having every detail including the sparkling dust shine through…

There is also a Grindhouse version of the 4K77 Star Wars project out now,

None of thise aer the latest print. The UK print was somewhat faded, and had a mold problem which caused red flashes on a lot of frames.

The new print is not faded and is mold-free, it should give us both a great colour reference and good quality for the main scan. The other prints will be to help with any frames missing from the new print, and as a resource for any badly damaged frames on the new print.

So long story short, it is much better than any of the previous sources (i.e. the UK, German or Frindhouse).

It is just a matter now of saving up some more dollars for cleaning and scanning and storage etc.

What’s the status on PayPal’s fee within the Euro zone now? When I participated in the “Face/Off” and “Titanic” projects, I seem to remember the fees were rather insignificant. I actually don’t have a PayPal account, so I just transferred money from my bank account to the one of a fellow member here, also in the Euro zone, who then used his PayPal account. Yeah, we jumped through some hoops, but in the end, it worked. I’m willing to help here, but I don’t want 25% to be wasted.

Great news, Poita - exciting times for ESB fans.
Please could you check your pms from a couple of weeks ago regarding a contribution made earlier in the month?
Many thanks,
Bluto

Okay guys and girls, I am still saving up to get the Empire print ultrasonically cleaned, but just so everyone can get a quick look at what we have, here is some of the first reel of Empire.
It is a low quality proxy scan, so that you can see how it looks. It hasn’t been cleaned, and it is a single flash scan, and not colour corrected, the final will be triple flashed at much higher resolution.

A big thanks to Althor1138 for helping out yet again, and to everyone that helped us secure this print.

BTW, the print came with a little bonus, at the start is a teaser for ‘Revenge of the Jedi’, this was only shown in the UK with the double-bill Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back theatrical run. It is pretty rare, so that was a lucky score.

The audio is not from the print, I didn’t have time to capture the audio, Althor1138 kindly synched some audio to it to make it more fun to watch.

So here it is, about 1.8GB in 720P, I hope you enjoy it, one of the last of the unfaded Empire prints in existence!

(Note, there is a blank set of frames from when the STAR WARS logo appears, it was just a glitch when scanning, the print is complete, i.e. it is not missing those frames)
