Eh, I don’t know. The only way to truly be creative and tell new stories is to stop listening to the fans and go your own way.
But why call it Star Trek then, if you change so many things that it doesn’t ‘feel’ as Star Trek anymore? The only thing I can come up with is brand recognition and that’s not a good reason.
The only problem is the people in charge of this show didn’t have a clear vision, and it felt like a desperate attempt to be “edgy and cool”, at the expense of the source material.
Well the only person who actually had a vision was fired for being too slow. And nobody of the new producing team (with the exception of Meyer, who was only a consultant and later left completely) has ever done anything similar to Star Trek before, and you can clearly see it.
When that failed, of course they would look at the other show and try to ape its success. This show is a joke.
Did it fail? I mean it failed with many of the old fans, but did CBS All Access and / or Netflix publish any numbers?
Full disclosure: I have not watched a single episode of either show, lmao. And from everything I’ve seen, that doesn’t look to be changing soon.
“The other show” is great, the only thing I hate about it is the humour. Which is strange since it’s supposed to be a comedy show.
