4k77 - reel by reel color grading (Released) — Page 2

That could be due to the reel change in the middle of that scene.

Oh, I assume it’s due to that. It looks like a different source was flown in, nearly flawlessly I may add, to correct some damage at the head and tail of the reels. I just though if the project was to better match the various reels to each other, why not better match the various sources to each other as well. I only noticed these two instances, so, not bad, but also not too much more work I wouldn’t think.

Dre. Did this project get finished, and or released yet? I was on vacation, but let me know if I missed some post that I don’t find here.

I’m in the process of downloading the final version for a last minute check. So, a release is imminent. 😃

Hi everyone,

This release is now available in the usual place.

Thanks to DrDre, Williarob and everyone involved in 4k77.

Enjoy!

A big thanks to Stotchy for his help, and Williarob, and the other collaborators for providing such an amazing source!

Is this a recode from the existing output or directly encoded from the source?

It’s a re-encode but at very high bitrate (40mbs) and with no drop in quality or detail from the existing 1080p of 4K77

I don’t have a “usual place” account. Can anyone help me find this? I love the original 4k77, but a color grade was needed and this looks perfect.

I am grabbing the release over on the organ. I see that there is currently no plan to release a 4K version of this. I must say, I’m a little disappointed. I understand, but you know, 4K, man! 😉

Awesome work, Dre. Can’t wait to watch through it this weekend.

Nice work on this. It’s a shame so many people that comment on myspleen are such dolts.

I’m also disappointed that there won’t be a 4K version of this. I can clearly see a difference in fine grain at 4K compared to 1080p. That being said I like the look of the colours and look forward to checking this out.

It is shocking the difference between OT and MySpleen, considering the crossover.

There’s a big percentage of OT members that are on spleen, especially for accounts ‘of a certain age’, and we’ve probably made a huge dent in the total numbers in terms of once time use, hit and run numbers, sadly (hence the closed invites). But I think there’s always been a pretty big community there that’s way beyond OT.

Which is why many of the Star Wars posts will have comments like, “Ugh, do we really need another Star Wars upload?” when the answer is obviously Yes. 😉

I feel you, but there just isn’t any additional picture detail you get at 4K vs the effort required to work with such large filesizes.

Give me a scan of the negative and I’d change my mind immediately. 😀

Thanks everyone for your comments. While I think this version is closer to the theatrical colors than the original release of 4k77, there’s allways room for improvement. It’s quite difficult to find a nice balance of colors given the enormous variation in the color balance between shots, as is maintaining sufficient detail in bright and dark shots given the much wider color gamut of a theatrical print. I’m sure there are many shots, that look better in the original release and vice versa, but two versions of 4k77 to choose from is allways better than one, I would say. 😉
