But is it so egregious one isn’t even allowed to ask what it means if one doesn’t know?.. I knew what a transvestite was but I didn’t know what a trap was. Sure am glad I wasn’t such a jerk as to ask for clarification.

How could you know what a transvestite is and then not know what is meant by a trap, just on context alone?

But for those who are still confused.

Defamatory: “deceptive,” “fooling,” “pretending,” “posing,” “trap,” or “masquerading”
Gender identity is an integral part of a person’s identity. Do not characterize transgender people as “deceptive,” as “fooling” or “trapping” others, or as “pretending” to be, “posing” or “masquerading” as a man or a woman. Such descriptions are inaccurate, defamatory and insulting. (See “passing” and “stealth” as problematic terms above.)

I didn’t even notice this part of your post. See my post directly above. “Trap” is a derogatory term, so no, you’re wrong. And yes I know the difference, but you don’t. Hopefully you do now.

Thanks for coming back to tell us off Frink. I honestly don’t see the problem.

So traps are guys who dress like girls, but it’s crazy to think that makes them a transvestite? I never heard the “trap” term until four or five years ago.

Do you even know the difference?

I’ll say first of all that I’ve never heard the term “trap” until now, though it seems to me like it’s not a term the people being described would use to call themselves. In which case I would think the “problem” would be rather obvious.

I’m not sure that I know what I’m talking about; but I’m going to jump in anyway. Many people do actually self-identify as “traps.” The term is used semi-frequently in the cosplay community; and, more often than not, it’s used affectionately. In that context, see snooker’s definition. The term is also used to refer to androgynous characters in anime and manga, also usually used affectionately. However, the term is also sometimes used to refer to transwomen, and that is almost always seen as fucked up. Because of the three different definitions and connotations, it’s often hard to get a grasp on what exactly the term means.

You might want to go back and read Handman’s original post. It had nothing to do with cosplay or anime.

Frink, if men who are hetero feel fooled or “trapped” by being attracted to biological men who dress like women, then that’s their prerogative. You can’t tell them to not feel that way or not be appalled when they encounter it.

They ought not to be mean, certainly, but they shouldn’t be chastised for feeling disgusted in such an obviously socking circumstance.

It is not. You’re being a child. Someone asked a legitimate question and we are discussing it. You are the one being immature here.

If you want people to be inclusive, then you should allow for legitimate questions. We didn’t invent the word. It’s just a word. We made no judgment about it. It’s just a thing that exists.

Stop being childish Dom. Men should be able to use derogatory terms to insult other men that dress like women because it’s the men using the derogatory terms that are the victims here.

What?? We’re human. If people feel uncomfortable about whatever it is, they should be allowed to be uncomfortable. If you’re going to be inclusive, you shouldn’t get to cherry-pick who you include or tell people they can’t have feelings that they do.

Such people shouldn’t use said feelings as motivation to mock or humiliate others, but they still should be allowed to feel uncomfortable if they so choose.

Hey we all know gay people make you feel uncomfortable when they “act gay” as you’ve said before. Putting that bit of craziness aside, do you call them a derogatory slang term because they dare to make you feel uncomfortable? And you see nothing wrong with that.

Such people shouldn’t use said feelings as motivation to mock or humiliate others, but they still should be allowed to feel uncomfortable if they so choose.

You can feel uncomfortable without resorting to insults.

Let’s just say there’s a difference between simply feeling uncomfortable and being “disgusted” that someone has supposedly “tricked” you.

No. I do use whatever language is relevant, and I try to be mature about it. I’ve never used the word “trap” to describe someone, nor am I likely to, but I do know what the word means. I have no power over whether people use it.

I didn’t know discussing the definition of a word was offensive.

Stop being so aggressive.

Traps are guys who dress convincingly like attractive girls.

Wrong. “Traps” are not guys who dress convincingly like attractive girls. “Transvestites” are (typically) guys who dress like girls. “Traps” are derogatory terms for a subset of transvestites who apparently dress like attractive girls just to humiliate people like you who are uncomfortable around gay people.

How so?

Defamatory: “deceptive,” “fooling,” “pretending,” “posing,” “trap,” or “masquerading”
Gender identity is an integral part of a person’s identity. Do not characterize transgender people as “deceptive,” as “fooling” or “trapping” others, or as “pretending” to be, “posing” or “masquerading” as a man or a woman. Such descriptions are inaccurate, defamatory and insulting. (See “passing” and “stealth” as problematic terms above.)

JEDIT: That refers to transgender people rather than transvestite people but I thought the concept (re: trap) was the same.

JEDIT2: I understand the definitions of transgender get a bit confusing so I might be slightly off myself. I’m willing to admit it if so and correct my stance…but that’s in regards to terms like transgender and transvestite. Not in regards to trap, which is clearly an insult.
