Missed the movie in theaters, but discovered that it was a book first, so I’ve started to read it. I like it so far.

Finishing The Lord of the Rings in audiobook format with the songs removed/replaced.
It’s amazing how much better the story is for me with Rob Inglis’ singing removed. Inglis’ renditions are grating and tiresome. I really did enjoy the story quite a bit, but I think Tolkien inserting umpteen pages of song lyrics into the plot breaks the flow and is unnecessary. It would have been better to put the lyrics in the appendix than to insert them in the story itself.

Almost done. I still like it. I hear the movie takes the book and its sequels and combines them into one movie. I hope that’s not the case because I think the movie will be available to me before I get the chance to read the sequels.

I first read this novel back in 2006/07. I remember finding it underwhelming, but couldn’t remember why. Having re-read almost half the book, it’s coming back to me. Little’s quite talented at infusing creepy/disturbing imagery in his descriptions, but these characters are weak and the strange happenings which I assume are meant to instill dread in the reader mostly come off as absurd and tedious. Consider this one weeded.

I’m reading Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. An elderly woman saw me but couldn’t see the cover of the book, so she asked me:
"That’s not a hand [sic] Bible is it?"
"No ma’am."
"Good," she said, "I’m glad to hear it."

I finished Ahsoka. It’s a good story. Interestingly, I found that one need never have watched the Prequel films in order to understand what is going on, but it is extremely important to have watched The Clone Wars TV series (at least the last couple seasons) because the story refers to several key events that happened. The story also does not introduce characters that appeared in the show as though to an audience who hadn’t watched it (or had only watched the Prequels). It does give context and backstory, but only to preface Ahsoka’s feelings or actions at the time in the story.
I enjoyed it, and I’m glad I did because I was more than a bit disappointed by a few Star Wars stories I’d listened to recently. So I’m glad such disappointment isn’t a continuing trend.

I never had the patience for Tolkien. He’s far too meandering.

I’ve waited close to three years for this novel. Signed it out from the library last Saturday, began it that night, finished it early this morning.
It’s a dark, haunting story to be sure. The protagonist is often conniving, spiteful, and treacherous; the remaining characters aren’t much more morally upright; the book certainly doesn’t lack for disturbing & violent imagery. At the same time, it’s quite beautiful, mystical, and if not altogether optimistic about the human condition, nevertheless recognizes & cherishes the innate beauty & mysticism of the human condition. It’s a story that certainly resonates with me.

It was really good. It’s often racist and sexist, but it seems true to the time period and characters for which it was written.

Ender’s Game and Ender’s Shadow.
for the umpteenth time.
JEDIT: …and I just now noticed an error. In Ender’s Shadow, Achilles seems to know that the Buggers have a hive mind, when no one in Ender’s Game (the original novel to which Ender’s Shadow runs parallel) knows about that by that point except Mazer Rackham. It doesn’t break the plot; it just makes no sense.

Currently going through:
The Land: Predators, Chaos Seeds book 7, by Aleron Kong
The Land series is on book 7, and I find that I don’t really care how long it takes to finish. I’m just enjoying the adventure. I do wonder how the series might end, but Aleron Kong can take 7 more books to carry on with the adventures of Richter and the Mist Village, and I’d be okay with it.

There are 18 stories in this collection, eight of which I read. Now, this isn’t the first time I’ve read Matheson’s work, and I’ve enjoyed most of what I’ve read before, but I’m not at all impressed with this selection. First of all, I bought this book expecting a collection of horror stories, not a collection of one horror story alongside a bunch of straight sci-fi stories. Perhaps I could overlook that if those sci-fi stories were good, but they’re mostly average, and pretty dated, at that.
I started a number of books this past year, but finished very few. This one won’t be among those few.

Read the first chapter last night. Certainly, this wasn’t written for the layman; I understood maybe a fourth of the ideas expressed. Still, I’ve wanted to read this book for some time now, so I’m going to stick with it. Perhaps it’ll become more understandable as I progress.

Well, I tried toughing it out, but there’s too much jargon/neologisms to wrap my head around.
I’m going to try to track down a copy of Sherburne’s A Key to Whitehead’s Process and Reality. It apparently reorders and annotates Whitehead’s material so it’s more accessible to the layman.
