If you want a small, portable keyboard with the functionality of a mechanical one, try this.
I’m having a hard time giving up the optical drive. I don’t really feel like I have a choice now if I want new hardware.
Frankly, these days you’re legitimately better off buying a pre-made system. Individual parts costs are through the roof and so it’s actually cheaper to buy pre-made now.
That actually is unclear. Apparently, prices are going down, though they’re not as low as they once were. I can still get a decent build on pcpartpicker, though it seems debatable on price vs buying a prebuilt from Amazon.

Built this years ago when the 4790K was new and have only upgraded the video card since then (GTX 970 originally). Strictly for gaming.
Windows 10 Pro
Corsair 250D Mini-ITX case
Intel i7 4790K (OC)
Corsair H100i V2 water cooler
Asus Z97I-Plus motherboard
Asus GTX 1080 Ti Turbo
16GB RAM
480GB M.2 SSD
Asus 34" ultrawide (3440x1440)
It was a pain in the ass squeezing it all in that tiny case, though. Given all the hassles of small case builds and the costs of parts these days, I think I’m going with something prebuilt for my next gaming rig. Maybe this, with the idea that I’ll be doing all my gaming from the couch in my living room:

I do all my work on a 2015 MacBook Pro with an external Dell 27" 5K display.

I wish I had one of those. I have a 2012 15", last model with the optical drive. Have loved it, but has been acting out lately. I don’t want one of those P.O.S. low-travel keyboards or to pay for the gimmick bar, though. Hopefully it can make it until the next-gen model is released, whenever that may finally be.
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

I’m not a fan of the new keyboards either, but I think we’re stuck with them. I had a 2010 previously, which probably had the same keyboard as yours. Pretty nice to type on. The 2015 keyboard is shallower than that, but still better than the latest models. Not a problem at my desk because I use an external keyboard, but when lounging on the couch or traveling, it’s annoying.
I don’t mind losing the optical drive, but Apple’s obsession with thinner/lighter is wrecking core functionality now.

I already have an HHKB Professional 2, which fits quite nicely on top of my laptop, but external keyboards are awkward to use away from a desk.
I’d already stopped relying on discs by the time they ditched the optical drive, so I don’t miss it at all.

I need it for The Sims. The old one.
My computer doesn’t need glasses…yet.

Don’t you EVER tell Handman what to do!
Just ordered a Dell XPS13 for my SO who has used Macs for awhile now. Much better value, plus it’s not a Mac.
The blue elephant in the room.

Wise words.

maybe if they’ve finally started making them with bluray drives.

Fixed.

Well, I took Tobar’s advice and bought a prebuilt PC. I bought it on Amazon Prime Day this week when it was on sale for $650 (instead of it’s current $750 price).

CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme GXIVR8020A5
Mobo: MSI B360M Bazooka
CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 (2.8GHz 6 Core)
RAM: 8 GB DDR4 (1 x 8GB)
Video: AMD Radeon RX 580 4GB
It comes with a 1TB 7200RPM HDD, but I think I’m going to migrate my drives from my old PC into my new on instead. The one major niggle I have is that the case isn’t designed to have an optical drive (ie. Bluray burner), but I suppose I can get an external enclosure for my burner and plug it in through USB. After all, the only thing I use my Bluray burner for is ripping my physical movies and shows and burning fanedits.
