THE GOOD

  • Dan Jurgens’ art
  • Jerry Ordway’s art
  • The nostalgic feeling said art left me

THE BAD

  • Too much navelgazing
  • Too little “oomph”

THE UGLY

  • Bendis’ little story didn’t pique my interest in his Man of Steel miniseries.

His Man of Steel miniseries is much better than that story would have you believe. However, some choices were made in that mini that I’m afraid you would hate, even if I don’t mind them myself, so perhaps it’s best you don’t pick it up, or at least wait for the trade.

Sounds like a little investigation’s in order. . . .

Jor-El?

What the non-literal literal fuck‽

Your investigation could lead to similar findings as this. . . .

EDIT: Not that that’s really Bendis’ fault, as Jurgens actually wrote that reveal in Action 980-something and spent a few issues with him before making him go away, but he returns in the new mini.

It would appear I have a poor memory. . . .

Anyway, I don’t hate this development; I’m actually perfectly indifferent to it. When one doesn’t care about official canon, one doesn’t care about official canon.

Bendis/Jurgens can do what they want. I have my own universe where Clark & Kara are the absolute last surviving Kryptonians, anyway.

This just might be the first Silver Age Batman story I’ve read which wasn’t almost wholly cringeworthy (probably due to the focus being on Batgirl rather than the Dynamic Duo). Robin was still an insufferable stain, though.

I and this comic were custom-made for each other.

It’s disappointing the dream on the cover wasn’t told in the book, though.

I recently finished Darths and Droids: Revelation of the Sith. I didn’t really feel like reading it, but wanted to get it done so that if I ever feel like picking it up again years down the line, they’ll be an in-universe time skip to go with it. Besides, I still enjoyed it.

Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye vol. 5

I found out IDW was rebooting their TF line this fall, so I decided to give up my long and slow quest to read this series in it’s original issues and started looking for the trades.

Gay robots are still lost in space and it’s very fun and also very sad sometimes and I love it so. Unfortunately, there was a big crossover event after the issues collected here, so I’m not googling around to find out how necessary that book is to the rest of the series.

I’ve been meaning to pick up one of the IDW Transformers lines, but I think I’ll wait for the reboot first.

In the meantime, I’ve been reading another one of IDW’s comics: Abraxis Wren of Eberron. Apparently humble bundle has been doing a bundle of Dungeons and Dragons licensed comics published by IDW for the last little while, and my curiousity prompted me to pick it up.

As much as a prick Wren is, it’s been a fun read.

I finally got around to trying Valerian. I read the first story, Bad Dreams. It was not very good. I wouldn’t call it bad, per say, but boring. There’s nothing really of interest in the story. I won’t be starting the next story anytime soon (especially since it’s a two-parter), though I did get the Omnibus edition, meaning it’s at my disposal if I ever chose to do so.

And I can’t go without mentioning the part where Valerian tells his unicorn friend he needs a horse. Why?! Just ride her!

About halfway through this trade (so 4/8 issues). I’m really enjoying it.

Oh man, you’re in for a treat! Sandman is amazing. Volume 4 (“Season of Mists”) and Volume 7 (“Brief Lives”) are my favorites, but they’re all great.

A mixed bag, but certainly better than The Dark Knight Strikes Again — in no small part, I assume, because Miller wasn’t the only writer or main artist, and most of what Miller did draw was vastly improved upon by Klaus Janson’s inks.

For the last several weeks, I’ve been reading Dennis O’Neil’s run on the Batman comics. They’re certainly fair stories, but fair’s about all I find them to be. Not even the Ra’s al Ghul stories rise above “alright” for me.

Now you’ve done reminded me of 2003. That was a bad move on your part.

content warning - ableism? maybe that’s the wrong word, but generally bad regardless

Why was this necessary?

Is the character meant to be unsympathetic? If so, I have no problem with him being an ableist piece of shit.

I haven’t read too many Archie or Punisher comics, yet I’ve the sneaking suspicion this here tale tops the rest.

The Vanisher has to have one of the absolute worst costumes I have ever seen in a comic. Even a Liefeld creation is easier on the eyes than this hot mess.

I just read Volume 4. It’s easily my favorite so far. O man.

Anyway, here are some other things I’ve been reading:

An unfortunately re-re-renumbered Justice League title (#1-7) - Good art, perfunctory story with good ideas under the surface that just don’t have the breathing room they need., but great characterization for most of the team.

The Immortal Hulk - I’ve never been a big Hulk fan, but this new run is interesting.

B. M. Bendis’ Superman titles (Superman #1-2, Action Comics #1001-1002) - Mostly good, with some fantastic art by Ivan Reis and Pat Gleason respectively, but several weird narrative choices make me scratch my head for now at least.

Marvel 2-in-One - Originally this title was brought back to tide fans over until the full Fantastic Four returned after a bizarre absence from Marvel’s line, but it’s actually rather impressed me. Very heartfelt. My biggest problem with it is the way it handles Dr. Doom, though that’s someone else’s fault from a year or two ago, and I don’t feel like finding out why he briefly called himself the “Infamous Iron Man” because it’s stupid.

Fantastic Four #646 - The first new issue was good, but some previews and solicitations of upcoming issues have me worried about the direction Dan Slott is going to take them.

Justice League Dark - This was an interesting story about the magical fantasy side of the DCU, but news of it already going into a crossover event after only three issues has all but killed my interest in it for now.

Mister Miracle continues to be the best book DC is putting out right now. I hate to see it end so soon with only two issues left.

Captain America #705-7 - Ta-Nehisi Coates is doing a great job making this a highly nuanced tale that reflects on modern America. “I shouldn’t be surprised by awful things anymore.” “The day you are no longer surprised is the day Captain America dies.”

Border Town - thoroughly impressive first issue to a new Vertigo series. Infuses Mexican folklore into teen drama and pulls no punches when it comes to issues plaguing Latinx-Americans and immigrants today. This book is going to be something truly special.
