Thanks go to the very generous anonymous donor. The funding goal has been met!

Great news! I’m really looking forward to this.

Hi I am a new member here at the forum but a Long time Disney enthusiast. I see I missed the funding for the Scan but I would be very Interested in buying a copy when it’s done. And if anyone know IF any other fan restorations of Disneyfilms available to buy please feel free to send me a om or write a response here to point me in the right direction.

Fan preservations are never to be bought or sold. They are freely available to those who legally owns the home video version used as the release’s primary source, or in the case of 35mm scans, any home video version (I think).

Soupdrinker0 and titanic have each donated some more funds towards this. It brings the total up to €1000 (it was actually a little below that). Thanks go to both of them for their amazing support.

At long last we have some samples from the scanner:

Yikes! The Blu-ray looks like a different film! 😮

What can you get a Wookiee for (Life Day) Christmas when he already owns a comb?

Could you get some Screens from the scenes of the Beast before he reveals himself to Belle? I think they are far to bright on the Blu-ray which makes the step into the light scene feel really anticlimactic.

Thanks for posting the Bluray screenshots. As you can see they bluray looks nothing like the 35mm, and no home video release looks authentic which is what I said here. Belle’s hair being black in the night scenes was in my notes when I last saw the movie projected from 35mm about this time in 2014 (THREE years ago now)!

All films undergo some changes for home video viewing. And that generally involves boosting the colour/saturation so it looks acceptable in a brightly lit room… in a darkened movie theatre you don’t notice the lack of colour in a print, and your eyes are more forgiving of inconsistencies with colour and brightness. But in a living room you have household objects around that are illuminated and give you a stronger basis for comparison. For that reason alone darker films are made quite a bit brighter, but also the poor dynamic range even of bluray to resolve dark details results in banding if some brightness isn’t applied.

It may be a few weeks before I can post more previews, when I can I will. If you want to help speed things along feel free to send a donation for the Alien scan, once that’s done we’ll have access to the hard drives which also hold the BATB and Face/Off scans.

Dug up the Work-in-Progress video stream someone kindly extracted from the BD ages ago. Posted the corresponding frames that weren’t pencil tests or storyboards below:

Love it dbear! Lots of people criticised the BD WIP as well and felt the LD WIP was more authentic, it’s not perfect of course but it’s actually pretty close and I think its limitations are mostly due to the SD telecine transfer, not because they intentionally fiddled with it. Thanks again for sharing it!

Looking at the Blu-ray screenshots after looking at the scans makes me feel like I’ll get diabetes…such a huge difference!

Yeah it’s clear they wanted it make it look more like Aladdin and Lion King on Bluray.

Jurassic Park isn’t TN1’s scan, it’s poita’s. There is always a different grading done for home video or broadcast, here’s a good video on the old telecine process if you’re interested:

Still anxiously looking forward to this! Please let us know if you need more funding or anything, I’m sure myself and others would be happy to assist!

I’ll echo nnnaomi – definitely looking forward to seeing the results of this project, and definitely would have helped to fund it if I’d been aware back then. (I think I learned of this project by way of the 35mm restoration for The Little Mermaid, to which I’m proud to be a donor.)

Something that would make Beauty and the Beast a movie again and not what feels like a cartoon.

Hi new to this thread and the website. Found it whilst looking for BatB on 35mm myself. You still taking donations on this?

Author

Not for this title specifically, but I do still need donations for Disney on 35mm. I’m currently making a public preview of Jungle Book from the 2nd print’s Reel 2. After that I will make a preview of poita’s Alice in Wonderland scan… I think I’ll prepare just one reel for a public preview for the time being. We’re hoping to get another AIW print (a German print) scanned soon, although that may still be a few months away before we’re able but we will get there. And there’s another print I need to get scanned very soon, and I’ll let everyone know about it when I can!

Thanks for the response! I’ll gladly donate to The Jungle Book project! Can you share a link?

Does anybody know of any Lion King 35mm projects going on? I’m trying to get 35mm copies of the Disney renaissance movies between 89 and 94 (basically everything between Mermaid and Lion King).

I’ve started the process of ripping my Laserdisc copies of those films, and the WIP version of BatB. Wanna upload these somewhere for others to enjoy but not sure where as I’m pretty new to this. Adding all the supplementals that are on the LDs too if anyone’s interested.
