I’m seriously lost as to why there are now three off-topic categories.

From the ‘Forum category reorganization’ thread in the Announcements Section…

Here’s my complaint (and with the caveat that I recognize this is an extreme first world problem)…I now have to click in even more locations to read all the topics I want to read.

Here’s my solution…create a global unread posts link. This exists on every other forum I’ve ever used, a request for one was the very first post I made here, and it’s been on the list (I believe) for nearly that long.

Please push it to the top of the list. Please.

There are other things that take priority right now, sorry.

You could always subscribe to the topics you want to read and see them sorted in order of latest reply on your subscription page.

Mainly, it’s really just the bifurcation of off topic that I find unnecessary.

Splitting Off Topic has been requested for a long time. Not everyone wants to wade through pages of junk topics filled with pages of junk posts. As I mentioned elsewhere, expect the typical stuff that went on in the old Off Topic to get moderated fairly heavily in the Media forum.

The tradeoff is that we’ll probably go a little lighter in The Cantina.

& also earlier in this thread too.

And so… Jay created a Media section. And it was good. 😉

This has worked out pretty well, and threads can be more easily found and discussed along with more relevant Media threads. A number of people didn’t want to go through what is now ‘The Cantina’ to find topics they wished to discuss.

The same for issues pertaining to news & current affairs, history, some general theory/ponderings, politics, religion and sport etc. So a new sub-forum - Culture - was created for those topics too.

As with the Media section, people may wish to discuss a certain issue in a specific thread. For example - if someone wanted to start a debate specifically on Socialism vs Libertarianism they could do outside of the unwieldy overlarge Politics thread - and hopefully it would stay on focused on the topic at hand, possibly (and hopefully) lifting the quality of conversation too.

It may a take a short while to get used to - but seems to make sense. Few people like change - yet despite a few quips, moans and grumbles, it seems to have gone fine so far. The Index threads for each of the 3 sections will hopefully be of some use too.

As far as I know, there are no plans for a 4th sub-forum (unless you include the long-running invisible ‘Members’ Invite-Only’ forum).

Jedit - there are no plans for a 4th sub-forum, I meant no plans. Doh! (unless you’re in the ‘Members’ Invite Only’ forum).
