I don't think I'll ever forget the roar the alien ships make, or the effect of the heat rays turning people to ash in seconds. Very frightening. I surprised it didn't get an R-rating. But I must say that having the ships buried on earth years before, was a bad idea. It created an unnecessary plot hole.
Spielburg?
I think the whole thing was tamed down too much in order to get a PG-13. I hate when filmmakers do that! He should have gone for the edge and done it in a gory, graphic way for a even greater shocking moment.
