Jesus Christ this. It’s like trying to look at ancient threads that have emojis in the posts. How did you even do that?!

I’m watching The Godfather.

I haven’t finished it yet. I will, though, I promise.

Technically it’s great. It’s pretty, it’s got good music, a good cast, there’s quite a bit going for it. But…

I don’t care.

I just don’t get this movie. I don’t understand why I’m supposed to care that x got shot or y killed z because I never cared about any of them. It all just feels empty, devoid of life, and I’m not sure I can make myself finish it.

And I know this is blasphemy, and it honestly hurts to say this because I want to love this movie as much as every other movie lover on the damn planet, but it just rings hollow for me.

I pray that someday I’ll rewatch it and see the masterpiece that everyone else sees, but right now… I got nothing.

So what am I, a stupid kid who doesn’t know a damn thing about film or art or anything, missing?

You’re not stupid, you just have your own tastes in films. Some people just love mob movies is all.
Citizen Kane is brilliant on a technical level, but am I supposed to care about any of the characters?

There are people who totally don’t get Star Wars. Shocking, I know.

Where were you in '77?

Godfather and Part 2 are two of my favorites.

When I watched Citizen Kane, I was awakened by the sounds of the snores of the other four people watching with me.

I really do feel stupid. I know I’m supposed to love it, but I don’t, so I feel like the stupidest, fakest, “movie lover” on the planet. I really feel like don’t know a gaddam thing.

It’s not as simple as that. For a young film viewer, much of its brilliance might not be as obvious on first viewing. When I first saw it many years ago, I just liked it as a good mob movie. Only after rewatch and more understanding did I come to see what made it so great.

At the time it came out, it’s excellence was a bit more obvious, but mainly because there had been nothing like it (gangster movies looked very different beforehand). Modern viewers take these elements for granted. But the things that make the film really great transcend its (at the time, though no longer) novel approach.

I assume most people who watch the original Star Wars for the first time as adults now have the same sort of shrug response.

I once thought as you do regarding a great many things. Then I had an epiphany: “Fuck consensus.”

I tend to feel personally that in order to say “fuck consensus” you need to have an understanding of why that is the consensus is in the first place.

Perhaps I should rephrase that.

“Consensus is immaterial.”

I like what I like, I hate what I hate, I’m indifferent to what I’m indifferent towards. Whether my opinion gets me a collective pat on the back or a flipped bird, I couldn’t care less.
