I know I'm a couple days late, but here's the skinny: YOU GOTTA SEE THIS! Hellboy is a fun little movie. Del Toro shows incredible restraint with CG and combines it with puppet effects for a more realistic vision. The whole cast is solid, and Ron Perlman IS HELLBOY! The cocky swagger combined with a sense of humanity works perfectly.

Again, GO SEE THIS!

How's that for spoiler-free?

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Well I saw Hellboy last night. It was pretty so-so. Not bad, but not really that good either. Perlman was great. The makeup was great, but the movie moved really slowly for a movie that was not too long it sure felt it.

I dunno, the guys I was with liked it, but most of them were unfamiliar with the comic. I didn't really buy into the HB + Liz romance, and I thought they did a bit too much with the pestilence dog monsters, it felt a bit redundant.

What were you expecting? Lost in Translation with the Hellboy/Liz romance?

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I went in with high expectations and really enjoyed it; of course, I didn't get out of the theatre until after 3am, so.... draw your own conclusions.

No I wasn't expecting any romance between them at all (its not in the comics). I don't mind that they decided to add it in, but I just didn't buy it. Maybe its because I didn't really find Selma Blair all that convincing/compelling, I dunno. I jsut didn't feel the romance worked, or was that important but the film sort of dwelled on it (though a lot of good humour came out of the situation, especally Hellboy with the kid)

I can't really explain why the film didn't wow me, it just felt a bit slow and uneven, thats the best way I can put it. I will definitely revisit it on dvd for a second chance though.

Kinda sounds like my reaction to ROTK, although that one almost had me screaming, "NOOOOOO! It's not supposed to be like that!"

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I still haven't read ROTK but something about the movie screamed that it wasn't as faithful to the source material as the first two were. Not that details weren't changed in those movies as well, but they seemed pretty close to faithful, IMHO. I have read FOTR and TTT.

IMHO all three lotr films changed stuff, but with FOTR everything was stuff I wanted to be changed when Ir ead the book and made the movie better. I hated the changes in TTT, PJ said it was the hardest to adapt but I find it puzzling because of the three it was the one that felt the most cinematic when i read it and my opinion was they could basically just stick to the letter on that one. ROTK was more like FOTR where the book it self needed some improvements, I thought the movie was great but some changes did bug me, mostly I could just tell what would be added into the EE.
