Well if you look at the previous series, all of the time the writing staff consisted of people who had previous Star Trek credits and absolute newcomers. The Discovery team had who? Fuller was kicked off early on, Meyer was just an consultant and was kicked out pretty soon too, Joe Menosky, one of my favourite Trek writers had 1 writing credit on Discovery before he joined the Orville writing team.

Meyer is not a really good example, he never knew or understood Star Trek, but he always understood drama, and he understood people. And all of the 3 movies he (co-)wrote were great interpersonal dramas. Discovery feels like it was written by computers who tried to emulate human behaviour (and not very successfully), and not by actual humans.
