If there’s anything sitcoms have taught me, it’s to value your friendships over romance. The girl of the week will disappear, but the supporting cast will be there to the end.

Don’t take advice from sitcoms.

That advice is half-right.

I would like to know in what respect it’s wrong.

The part about the “supporting cast” being there to the end. People move, people die, people outgrow each other. It happens. Friendships come and go too.

Truth. Finding the one person who sticks around is a great win.

The blue elephant in the room.

Basing your happiness entirely on a partner is a really bad idea.

Who said entirely? I agree that shouldn’t be your entire focus.

It was pretty heavily implied in the posts that the expectation was that a relationship with an ideal woman would solve the bulk of the problems in life.

To put my terrible advice more eloquently:

If you’re looking for a relationship because you want to share life with someone interesting and intelligent and helpful, then go for it. If you’re looking for a relationship because you’re depressed and think that a relationship will make you less depressed, then don’t because I have a strong feeling that relationships built on that mindset will not work.

I shouldn’t have generalized earlier, I admit.

Sometimes I feel I’m missing the same thing from my life, Hand. But it’s not something I expect from my regular friends. I think we both just need a girl…

Many of us here need a girl. It would solve some of the deeper emotional problems.

Honestly, it probably wouldn’t. Every situation is different, but just having a girlfriend generally isn’t a cure-all.

This is better put.

Well said.

I would be tempted to agree, but mfm said it so I’m sure there’s something wrong with it if we all just look at it closely enough.

I can’t stop thinking about her. I’m losing sleep, but I can’t do anything about it because she’s out of town for awhile. I guess I’ll just be an insomniac until I can let her know how I feel.

Good luck, and well wishes. It’s always hard to let someone else know how you feel.

It’s perfectly fine. Products containing the same dosage of the same active ingredient are sold over the counter as sleep aids.

I used to take benadryl every night to sleep also, and it turned me into a real crab apple. Hated everything and everybody. Was always in a haze. Went away as soon as I quit taking it every night. Could very well have been a coincidence but I’ve sworn it off ever since making that connection.

Maybe you’re allergic. That would be ironic.

Yeah except that doesn’t make any sense

I actually only really started taking it nightly a couple weeks ago. I really enjoy it. It’s something I look forward to.

taking sleep aids is really bad for you, but not sleeping is even worse.

I didn’t say it was good for me. I love to sleep and I love to sleep hard.
