Incredibles 2

Finally! After fourteen long years of waiting, Pixar has finally given us a sequel to The Incredibles, and it’s without a doubt the best sequel they’ve produced (Toy Story notwithstanding). That’s not saying too much, and the film shows some of the same problems that have plagued the other Pixar sequels.

So, it may sound like the film is a disappointment, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I looked to my friend afterwards, and he mentioned, “You genuinely enjoyed a movie at the theater? I’m shocked!”. I suppose I can be a bit of a curmudgeon, but I still care for these characters, and love this world enough that I could put aside its flaws.

Cars 3 is pretty good. Finding Dory is pretty good. Off the top of my head.

Cars 2 is a blight on animated civilization however.

Syndrome was the perfect villain. The more I think on it, the more the sequel doesn’t compare to the original in the slightest. But I still enjoyed it for what it is.

Funnily enough, those good sequels are the only two Pixar films I skipped on watching. I saw Cars 2, and lost interest in ever seeing another one of those, and I didn’t find the time to see Finding Dory. I’m not sure if I’d like them, though. Monsters University was not too great.

MU was average. Better than Cars 2 (low bar) not as good as Cars 3 or Finding Dory.

I will say the fact that I didn’t remember MU as a Pixar sequel kinda points to its average-ness.

Please. MU was a lot of fun. Cars 3 was barely better than 2 for most of its runtime.

This reminds me of a sappy early '00s song I’d much rather keep far in the back of my mind.

Oh wait!, wrong year.

I’d say it’s up for debate whether or not 2004 counts as part of the early '00s.

But it’s this song I’m talking about.

Wow, over 400 million views? I’ve never heard this song in my life.

Not enough people read the EU.

The sequel is fun and relives a few of the gags. And Jack Jack and Edna are hilarious.

It doesn’t live up to the original because it can’t, by definition, as a sequel, given why the original was so great. It’s novelty, the cleverness of the dozen references to other movies (Bond, War of the Worlds, every super hero movie ever, 2001, just off the top of my head). The sequel was never going to live up to that because it takes place in an existing paradigm.

That’s… a take.

I’m not sure how controversial that is. Most people would agree 3 isn’t all that great and is towards the bottom of the Pixar barrel.

Sure. All the Cars movies are lesser Pixar. 3 is still better than 2 by a country mile.

This.

I will grant that my daughters love Cars 3 to death and that probably clouds my judgement, but it’s still good and still sooooooooo much better than 2, which is simply awful.

Come to think of it, they love 2 also. So I dunno.

I agree it’s better, but probably more by like a normal mile. Also my point was that for most of it it’s only kinda better. The last third is much much better than anything in 2.

This is the only thing you said that was right.

Maybe part of it is that I don’t find 2 to be awful, just incredibly boring and uninteresting. That’s basically how I feel about most of 3 too.

I was shocked by the trailer for Cars 2. It didn’t look anything near the quality I’d expect from Pixar.
