Ok, folks. Here is where we stand with all this…

STM is enjoying a revival in theatres this year. All three cuts have been shown in revival movie houses nationwide. This makes up for Fathom Events passing STM over for other films this year, such as “Grease” (probably on the merit of that film outgrossing STM as 1978’s top grossing film).

There are many possibilities for a proper 40th Anniversary Box Set of STM containing all three cuts of the film plus potential new supplements never before released on home video. So…

Criterion and Shout Select now have deals with WB, thus the floor is open.

  1. Criterion has until Sept. 15 to announce this title in time for the 40th Anniversary.
  2. Shout Select could announce this title at the upcoming Comic Con next month in San Diego.
    -or-
  3. WB could do this in-house in the manner of their 70th Anniversary Box Set of “Wizard of Oz”, but such an announcement would have to be made by the end of September.

If none of this happens, then it would have to be up to the fans to create their own “Disc 4” to supplement the three cuts that have been put on numerous DVD/Blu ray incarnations.

Keep in mind Alex Serpa has attempted a complete stereo remix of the TV cut as well as putting together a compilation documentary on the making of the film (that special is still up on YouTube). And Oliver Harper also did a commentary track on the 2000 cut (that too is on YouTube).

So fans, make your plans and tell all of us what you would do for a “ Disc 4 “. Here is a hint—much of what you would put in is on YouTube too.
