Except that the revised crawl first appeared in theaters in 1981, so it’s still a theatrical preservation.

This is a 1977 theatrical preservation. It’s not 4k81 or 4k97 or any other revisionist versions.

This seems a bit over the top. No, it shouldnt have said A New Hope in the main release, but pretty much everyone who enjoyed the film on any home media release, before things started actually getting batshit in 1997, has memories of it that way.

It seems like the main thing going against it is what faithwyn suggested, where it reminds people of the later, terrible changes that would be made. But that sounds like a personal issue, and a side release wouldn’t affect anyone that doesn’t download it. After I did an optional ANH version of Despecialized 2.6, I made sure it was only done for 2.7 in secret, by PM, because of people getting irrationally angry about it. 😃

Agreed, completely. Trying for a little revisionism is like trying to get a little pregnant

That’s a cute thing to say and all, but not really a working analogy in any way. 😃

So…would you happen to have this secret ANH 2.7 lying around still? Asking for a friend… 😉

It looks like I finally deleted the mega link. Maybe ask in the despecialized thread, as a number of people here grabbed it.

Yeah I don’t understand the vitriol of not wanting to include the '81 crawl too. Any 80s kid who grew up with Star Wars knows it that way too.

Why not both? It’s just the crawl. I like options.

Because it’s time taken away from 4k80 and 4k83, and perhaps other original preservations.

huh? like you could say that about almost every project here.

Hey so I’ve been trying to find this, but have no idea where you guys are getting it.

If someone wouldn’t mind helping out via PM it’d be appreciated. I can provide proof that I’ve bought the official releases in the past.

Only need the HD version.

I made it available on yggtorrent (french private tracker, signing on is currently possible)

If you want the 81 crawl, splice it in yourself. Make a branching dvd/bluray yourself. But don’t get snooty if people say, “that’s not the goal of this project”

Hey, guess what? I already asked for the raw scan of the 81 crawl, so I’m doing exactly that. Sounds like you’re the one getting snooty to me.

any chance of someone making an “a new hope” crawl for this?

Just a reminder of the absolutely unsnooty comment that started this.

Maybe if the people who said that were actually involved with the project cough cough Williarob cough, there would be less snoot.

boy that escalated quickly, lol

yeah if anyone ends up making the 81 version, let me know or make a new thread or something!

i know it’s not the ORIGINAL, but that’s the version i grew up with on VHS, plus it’s a small change that makes it match the other 2 movies so I really don’t mind it as a change. but certainly i know that’s not the point of most of these restorations, it would just be nice to have the option if someone with the skills and inclination makes it 😃

and yeah i’m definitely rockin that ANH 2.7 😃

that’s actually the main thing keeping me from switching to the SSE or this

I wasn’t talking to you, so… chill?..

I was talking to people in general who get all worked up and ask for things. Perhaps I spoke too harshly; maybe my age is gettin’ to me - or I assume people should know the purpose of this specific project.

Anyway if people are working on an alternate version, cool! After all, 4k77 was built in the hope that people will go wild with it later.

Not really trying to escalate this, but it is more of a change than that. It was intended as a small inobtrusive change, certainly, but it failed due to careless editing. Watch the arrival of Tatooine with the 77 crawl – the planet comes into view right on the musical cue (considering the projected frame was slightly smaller than the 35mm frame, it was likely perfectly timed for theatres), as the original editing intended. Now try the 81 crawl. The entire planet misses its cue, and by no small margin. Cracks me up every time I see it, like the stormtrooper head-bonk.

I wish someone with really good skills would recreate the original '77 Opening Crawl. The 4k77 is fairly good, but it’s missing the proper “words fading out” as seen in '77. It’s very similar to how the '81 looks, but obviously doesn’t have the “Episode IV” or “A New Hope” wording in it…among other things.

Anyone here interesting in re-creating it?

Isn’t 4k77 a scan of the original crawl…?

Author
Time

It’s a scan of a faded section of film that contains the original 77 crawl. In 1981, all of the technicolor prints had their openings spliced out and replaced with the new crawl containing “a new hope”. So the technicolor prints are useless for preserving that.

But ChainsawAsh has a copy of a scan of the 1981 crawl and will do a fork of 4k77 that contains this version.

It is, but it’s the SSE crawl upscaled from 1080p.

The copy of the 1981 crawl Willarob has provided me with is a 4K scan, though. Not sure if we don’t have a 4K copy of the 1977 crawl, or if we just don’t have a good quality one…

You’re 100% correct here. Someone offering a version with the 81 crawl, or with DNR, or with Jar-Jar rotoscoped in doesn’t affect the glorious non-DNR 4k77 I have, and I shouldn’t really care what custom versions people want. That being said, I remember how much I was annoyed that they added it when I saw it on the big screen in 81. I’ve always resented revisionism. And I feel exactly like Faithwyn feels about it:

To me, that was the first warning shot across the bow that Georgie was not
content and would alter the film further. Every time I see it I get a little angry.

But hell, that’s my problem. If anyone can make an 81 version, or can cajole someone else into creating it, then go for it. I’ll avoid making any snarky comments about it going forward.

And yeah, my analogy breaks down here, as you can indeed do a little revisionism. I just find it funny 😉

Author
Time

It’s understandable. We are all, after all, extremely aware of the unfortunate course of events this film would eventually go through.

Author
Time

Wow!
I was just stating a opinion, though I DO believe that renaming a film, editing and altering in any way
IS just plain wrong. I’m one who did not grow up with the S.E., I was quite grown in '77 thank you.
In 1997 I bought the boxed set not knowing a thing about the changes and sat down with my children
to have a ‘Star Wars’ marathon, then suddenly it was like: “cover your eyes kids… don’t watch!”
Today I am so very grateful to folks like Harmy, TN-1, and Williarob for all their work to assure
that people like me ought never have to sit through one frame George’s evil ‘original vision’.
Also I think people who actually enjoy the changes should be able to continue to do so.
George Lucas wanted to make sure that we would have no choice in this, but today we do.

George vs George

I thought I recognized your foul stench when I entered this forum!

for the record i can’t stand the special editions lol

i just like the other non-prequel films and it bugs me if SW77 is the only one without the episode number, plus that original crawl DOES look off to me because it’s not what my vhs had.

i certainly understand preferring the original though, and the value of historically preserving it. it just sucks cause i feel like people either fall into “don’t care about the changes”, or “only want the original theatrical 77 version” and it’s tough being not QUITE in one camp or the other when the ONLY change I like is the 81 crawl

It probably has the words staying on a bit longer, and slowly fading out once they are very far away, I presume?

Well, this is nice. My computer lacks the power to play the 4K release at full speed, but even the 1080P version is a nice improvement over SSE (which wasn’t half bad either). I just hope that this near professional quality transfer doesn’t paint a giant target on the backs of everyone who worked on it. I’d like to see ESB and (especially) RotJ given a similar restoration which can’t happen if the lawyers appear.

Speaking as one of the collaborators on this, I’m not worried about a target. Lucasfilm could easily nullify our work by releasing their own version. I don’t think they’d want the negative publicity they’d probably get if they did come after us as well.
