Ok, what happened with the original poster?
Maybe his thread was more like a suggestion than a statement?

Ah who knows, but my work must continue!

Could take years to pull this one off. Can it be done?

This sounds amazing but, how could you be sure you can get all those prints Id love to see some of these in 4K in all honesty but these are the ones I’m looking forward to the most

Lion King
Aladdin

Also not sure if it counts but id say Tarzan deserves a 4K treatment its such a beautifully animated film and definitely a classic of the Disney 2D animated films super happy that Hunchback and Hercules are on the list too since those seem to be overlooked sometimes also it’s probably too recent yet but LILO and Stitch would be amazing

I don’t think there’d be a point to 4K for anything past Little Mermaid (I think the CAPS films were rendered at 2K) but even 2048x1234, which should be close to the native resolution, should be an improvement, since it’d be the original theatrical versions, unlike the official releases.

I think that Make Mine Music needs an uncensored release the most.

I have a print of the Lion King. I personally wouldn’t consider CourtlyHades296’s list as definitive, there are titles on there that I have already passed on, and would only consider if there was strong support from others. I’m going to need donations to get more prints scanned next year, so far I’ve had 4 Disney films scanned (technically scanning is ongoing for all of those but one), and there’s a lot more to go! Did you want to make a donation?

A lot of people thought that way, however it isn’t the case. Aladdin and Lion King and somewhat closer to the 35mm colours, however BATB is nothing at all like the Bluray. Have a look at the screenshots I posted:

I didn’t say there was no point to scanning a 35 of those movies, I said there was no point to scanning a 35 at 4K.

Oh right, well we only get half resolution of blue and red due to the bayer mask anyway, which is how Cinderella was scanned, AND you lose resolution to the stuff outside of the picture area. Here’s an example of what resolution you would get if you did it at 2K:

Obviously that’s LATT LPP not one of my scans, but the principle is the same. The picture with is only ~1800 pixels at 2K and then you’re going to lose some more due to cropping, and to make it 1080p you’ll need to stretch it. For Academy films 1 2K scan would be sufficient for 1080p… but detail and grain structure are better preserved by scanning at 4K. 😃

I remember seeing a behind the scenes thing on Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty about how they got the original masters, scanned then and then broke it down into background elements, characters and others and ended up restoring them piece by piece I found it very interesting how they rotoscoped certian elements to clean them up and place them back into the foreground and background it’s like they really went all in on them but I do wonder why they just didn’t restore the prints in their entirety instead of breaking them down like they did, then again maybe because of the age of some of the movies it was better to do it that way

That’s absolutely unnecessary, have a look at the samples I’ve posted from Cindy and that’s from a 35mm print! What Disney did was convert what was hand painted animation into digital animation - all the “flaws” from the manual process were wiped away. And then they changed the colours and god only knows why, but they basically boosted them up to the levels of Aladdin and Lion King instead of leaving them how they were.

And not only that but they wiped out intended details in their “restorations” as well:

Disney probably changed and boosted the colors to try and give the film a more modern look compared to the more subdued colors found on the original version although IMHO they should have kept the base colors more faithful in appearance to the original colors as seen on the negatives because the new color palette just don’t look very good in comparison.

DANG I knew that there was some detail that was lost in the “restoration” but I didn’t think there’d be THAT much detail lost during the process, if Walt were alive today and saw how Disney in the modern age was butchering his work in such a fashion you can bet that heads would be rolling over crap like this, changing the colors on its own is bad enough, removing details that are meant to be seen is completely unacceptable and Disney should be ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES for allowing such garbage to bear the Disney name.

Examples like this provide the best argument for why fan efforts to preserve film prints whether they be 16mm, 35mm, or 70mm is so important in this day and age because those film reels aren’t going to last forever, and sometimes even the original companies that made said films end up getting something in their process wrong somewhere along the line whenever they go back to work on a new release of their older films like Disney ended up doing in the case of their BATB and Cinderella Blu-Rays.

Not to hijack this thread but I’m currently eyeing an auction for a nice looking IB Tech of a certain Disney animated feature. I could realistically barely scrape 3/4ths of the starting bid but I doubt it will stay at that for long. Admittedly this is a little speculative but if anyone here can contribute towards a potential purchase, drop me a PM for more details! 😃

Not at all, it’s a fantastic print and I hope some kind people may be interested!! If anyone can donate/pledge $100+ to secure a true classic (on IB Technicolor!) please send dbear a message as it is urgent, or this opportunity my pass us by.

My next project, hopefully, will be Alice in Wonderland. You’ll hear more on that in a few days.

In the meantime we have prints that can be scanned, but these are not a part of my agenda so I’m not going to have them scanned. However, other people show interest from time to time - if you want them scanned you need to commit to pay the scanning bill (you can fundraise as well of course). Contact me for a quote or more information.

Prints available to be scanned (all should be in very good condition, and we can check prior to scanning):

  • Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
  • 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
  • Bedknobs and Broomsticks
  • Mary Poppins
  • The Sound of Music (incomplete, reel 2 missing)

How many prints have been scanned but not processed yet?

Author
Time

A few. I don’t want to just dump a list, but I’m currently getting Fantasia Kostal scanned. But it’s important to say we have had to pass on a lot of opportunities due to lack of funds or lack of interest. A few different people have said they want to do 20,000 Leagues for example, but nothing has so far come of it. We can scan it now this month from a good print and you wouldn’t need to worry about purchasing a print in unknown condition… or we can pass on it. There are other non-disney prints that can be done as well if there’s interest - there’s an Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade print that can be scanned for example, and it’s in very nice condition. Much nicer than the Raiders of the Lost Ark print was in for example.

Guys we have access to the following prints but will lose the access very, very soon. If anyone is interested in them get in contact, they are not a part of my agenda:

  • Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
  • 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
  • Bedknobs and Broomsticks
  • Mary Poppins
  • The Sound of Music (incomplete, reel 2 missing)
  • Die Hard (mint cond.)
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (mint cond.)

Condition of most of those prints varies from very good to mint. There are some I personally don’t think warrant the expense of scanning like Mary Poppins because it has a great HD release already, but if someone wants to pay the scanning bill it can be done.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks also has an amazing HD version. I’d think Last Crusade and Die Hard are more in need of it.

Author

While the Die Hard print is enticing, because Die Hard, the UHD release really is fantastic, so it probably isn’t worth it.
