Anyone figure out a definitive way to fix the jerky/choppy playback? I’m trying to play the file on my Apple TV 4K via Plex. I’ve tried remuxing it with both MKVToolNix and MP4Tools. Neither worked…

Wired or WiFi.

The server is wired but the Apple TV is wireless. I don’t think it’s a buffering issue though. There seems to be an issue with the file on certain video players based on everyone else’s comments. Some said they were able to fix it by remuxing but that hasn’t worked for me.

Sorry to hear. Just some thoughts:

Thanks, yeah I saw that link. My server says ‘direct stream’ for the video and transcoding for the audio. Are you able to play it with a similar setup?

I don’t have the right equipment. I have a wired Roku 4210x2, so it’s 1080p only. But it mostly can play the 4K, but with lots off buffering during busy scenes as my i3 stuggles to keep up with the transcoding.

The DNR version is coming along quite nicely I think:

You’re doing an amazing job. Depending on how the DNR version will look in fast moving scenes where I know a lot of such filters can struggle with noise/grain it might turn out my preferred version, but the non-DNR versions released so far looks amazing of course.

The only thing that strikes me with those two screenshots right away is the amount of edge ringing. Especially visible in the shot of Leia. Now I don’t know which filters (or even software) you’re using to do it, but if you add sharpening after the DNR, I guess it’s better to not do that. At least from my experience of experimenting with such things in avisynth a few years ago, I always got the best result by sharpening on grain level before applying a filter and then blurring it back so to speak. Msharpen(1).Blur(0.4) was the method I used for grain level sharpness back then.

It would be interesting to see some shots from your DNR version in fast moving scenes. I remember mvtools in avisynth was never good at handling that, at least. Now of course I never tried it on something with such high resolution either.

Oh and sorry if I’ve missed any previous info. This project made me jump back on the forum to check it out. I’ve had a few very rough years and this sparked my interest in SW restoration projects a bit again.

I’ve tried to get the 4K version running on MPC-HC with madVR, but whatever I do, I get really choppy playback. Any pointers, or should I just download the 1080p version?

I’ve got a new 4K TV I’d love to play this on, and although it’s being said there is little difference between the two, I’d love to watch it in its native resolution.

What are your computer specs?

Windows 8.1
CPU: Intel 8-core i7-4710HQ @ 2.50 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M
HDD: 1TB HGST HTS721010A9E630
RAM: 12 GB

It is a laptop, as well. Is it my GPU?

I believe so. I don’t think it supports hardware accelerated HEVC playback.

Yikes.

Grab mkvtoolnix and remux the file, other people have had success with smoother playback after doing that.

I’ll try this, thanks!

Also try MPV player. MPC stuttered on me but MPV played the file fine.

It’s great to hear from you again, You_Too. Sorry that you’ve been having a rough time of it! While I don’t have much interest in the DNR version, it’s always good to have your input.

Which audio track should I be listening to??

English 2.0 preferred…

^ If all you want is English 2.0, the first track on the MKV should be fine.

That’s the track that would be most true to the actual track that was on the Technicolor print, right?
Either way, why do they say “2018” at the end? Has someone done some kind of better rip of it from the LD?

Hairy_Hen has done a new theatrical mix that he has just released as part of 4k77.

But that’s the 70mm surround mix, right? I thought the 1977 stereo track came from an LD release.

Yeah, that part’s weird. AFAIK there’s basically one “unicorn” digital LD version of the 1977 stereo track, from a Japanese pan-and-scan LD release, and that’s it (currently synced and patched over by h_h and available with the DeEd’s). Everything else is analog rips from various pressings, which are fine, but to be honest just aren’t as good. So either it’s another analog LD rip, or a new sync/patch-over of the digital rip, or… but not sure if I want.

It might be the 35mm optical track… not sure.

The new 70mm track is by Hairy_Hen. You can see what’s new here: https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Star-Wars-1977-70mm-sound-mix-recreation-stereo-and-51-versions-now-available/id/11348/page/27#1207818

The new 35mm stereo track is by schorman13. The one on the latest version of DE (2.5) was done by Hairy_Hen, which fixed a number of audio drop outs and issues from the laserdisc. They are both primarily sourced from the Japanese digital laserdisc, but the one done by schorman13 uses the newly available optical audio to determine which dropouts and crackling were present in the original theatrical version, and which ones were not for maximum accuracy.
It should sound very similar to all the previous versions of the 1977 35mm stereo track that have been released, but it’s the most accurate to what was heard in theaters.

^ Yeah, that’s it exactly. The 2018 version offers a small (but welcome) increase in fidelity.

The most amazing part of this post is that no two examples are even CLOSE to looking “similar” in color grading. But I definitely know which one is my favorite. 😃

To be able to compare 4k77 with other editions of Star Wars, I took the frame 5032 (GOUT-synced) of 13 versions: 4k77 (2160p), SilverScreen Edition 1.6 (1080p), BluRay (1080p), Despecialized Edition 2.7 (720p), GOUT DVD (720p), 16mm (480p), LD 1995, LD 1993, LD Mitsubishi, VCD, 8mm, HBO broadcast, VHS.

I adjusted the proportions of each version so that they fit and the comparison is visually effective.

In my opinion, the accuracy of the 4k77 version is similar to Blu-Ray. 4k is not really sharper than 2k (4k does not help much given the grain on the film).

This new 4k77 version has very natural and less aggressive colors than the BR or the DeEd 2.7, but the SiverScreen Edition(TN1) is still my favorite because it is less cropped and keeps the full width of the film (there is 11% more image than on the 4k77 version).

Maybe the SSE didn’t need as much motion correction as 4K77? I know it takes some cropping to achieve a more stable motion. Or maybe the “normal” 35mm prints like the one SSE is sourced from were less cropped than the Technicolor prints?

EDIT: After looking at a few shots from the previews I have it at least looks like the source for 4K77 was jumping around a LOT. It’s not strange they had to crop it to keep a stable motion.

The only comparison I could make is this, the one on top is most likely the source for 4K77, even though the very few preview pics I have are very compressed:

This also shows they did an amazing job on cleaning it up and correcting the colors. I’d actually love to see an official before/after comparison of some shots. 😃

This was an accidental double post but I’ll use it to post one more comparison of a shot they had to crop a lot less. Looks like it was done to get the most out of every shot while stabilizing them.

Yes. That’s pretty much what was posted earlier in the thread.

Remember that the cinema presentation is more cropped than what is on the full frame of the film.

Very correct. I looked at a couple photos from the Senator screening and it’s amazing how much more can be seen in 4K77. When screened there it cropped out a lot more especially on the sides.

Wow. The original looks even worse than I thought. The amount of cleanup is amazing.

I’m streaming from my iMac to my 4th generation Apple TV via Plex without issue… I can take a look at my Plex settings when I get home if you’d like to compare.

Out of curiosity, it wouldn’t be an issue with your router, would it? I used to experience notable buffering times when streaming large movie files or streaming trailers via the Apple Trailers app before upgrading my router.
