Quick opinion time on the sound mixes from everyone…

I have never watched Star Wars in mono. Which mono track should I do so with? And does anyone have an opinion on whether it is better or not overall?

I hope this is still somewhat on topic enough.

There’s only one English Mono track…

But IMO there are enough differences between this version and the others that it definitely is worth a listen.

For the non-hardcore viewer (who wants a single copy of the best currently available of star wars):
Whats is the consensus for 4k77 vs 2.7 despecialized?
Is this the new frontrunner? Or should it be considered a copy to be used for future preservations?
My projector only displays 1080p.
Cheers

Obviously subjective, but mixture of resolution, clarity, colouring etc to give overall quality for viewing. As I said, if one were to choose a single copy to have at home.

I’m that situation, I’d pick this one: it’s the release that comes closest to the experience of watching Star Wars in theaters in '77.

Is the current state of affairs regarding the mono audio track still that we have a version recovered from a recording using a cassette player? It’s not like someone has gotten the mono mix from a print or anything, right?

My stance on revising fan edits.

It’s actually mainly sourced from a European arial VHS recording.

There have been 16mm prints with mono mixes but they sound worse than the one from DeSpecialized and 4k77. Puggo’s version of ANH contains this mono mix and you can hear lots of hissing and warbling. I don’t know if thre have been any other discoveries since then…

Yeah, the mono from the print ended up on the SSE, but it had had heavy noise reduction applied. I’d hoped that it might be possible to process the raw audio from the print and improve on the VHS-sourced version, but nothing’s happened so far. It’s really frustrating that we don’t have a better source.

There is talk of another source for the mono audio from a 35mm print, but it will be awhile before it shows up from the discussions on it.

I have previously already recommended the SSE over DeEdv2.7 and this one is vastly superior to the SSE, so I’d definitely recommend this as the go to version, at least for now 😉

No, it will be 1080p using 4K77 and Blu-Ray as sources, because the Blu-Ray, still the main source, is 1080p and, as I demonstrated before, there isn’t really any additional detail in the 4K version of this, so the only result of doing the whole thing in 4K would be unnecessarily huge files and slow workflow, when doing the whole thing in 1080p and then upscaling the result to 4K would render pretty much indistinguishable results. Any further discussion of that should probably go to the Despecialized thread though.

I’ve tried to get the 4K version running on MPC-HC with madVR, but whatever I do, I get really choppy playback. Any pointers, or should I just download the 1080p version?

I’ve got a new 4K TV I’d love to play this on, and although it’s being said there is little difference between the two, I’d love to watch it in its native resolution.

I believe so. I don’t think it supports hardware accelerated HEVC playback.

Grab mkvtoolnix and remux the file, other people have had success with smoother playback after doing that.

I’ll try this, thanks!

That’s fantastic news. I’d like to hear more about it at some point (and in another thread).

Anyone figure out a definitive way to fix the jerky/choppy playback? I’m trying to play the file on my Apple TV 4K via Plex. I’ve tried remuxing it with both MKVToolNix and MP4Tools. Neither worked…

The server is wired but the Apple TV is wireless. I don’t think it’s a buffering issue though. There seems to be an issue with the file on certain video players based on everyone else’s comments. Some said they were able to fix it by remuxing but that hasn’t worked for me.

Thanks, yeah I saw that link. My server says ‘direct stream’ for the video and transcoding for the audio. Are you able to play it with a similar setup?
