Lando being pansexual isn’t progressive at all. In most people’s minds, all that means is that Lando is more of a superfreak (in the sexual sense) than we thought before. Who cares? Like everyone said, I’d be shocked if it even came up in the movie.

I’m just sick of it being all over my feed. Like if the character is, then he is. Put it in the movie or whatever. But I wish they’d stop making these claims behind the scenes, and that the media would stop going crazygonuts about it and making articles pop up everywhere.

If they put it in the movie you’d complain about him making you uncomfortable.

I mean, 99% of articles on the internet are not worth reading. What’s a few more?

Perhaps.

Given that Billy Dee’s ESB character seemed to me simply a player and a hustler, and there wasn’t any further sexual subtext about him in the film either way. Nein Nunb being his copilot in ROTJ obviously had no sexual connotation whatsoever. So adding this to Solo seems like retconning the character, especially in these times.

I mean, did it ever suggest as much in any of the Legacy novels? If not, then there’s very little precedent to add it here.

Legends doesn’t count for shit. There’s nothing in the films that contradicts this development. So why is it an issue?

(Hint: it’s not)

As I said, it’s an issue for me because the media is crazy over it and it’s filling up my news feed. It’s just compounded by the fact that no previous canon suggested such a development. Sure, it doesn’t contradict it, but it also doesn’t imply it. Whether he is or not is not the issue really, but rather the pandering and following media craziness.

Which is why I’m bitching about it in here rather than debating the significance of it in the General forum. For myself, my opinion is who cares whether he is or not?

He repeatedly hits on Leia. And… that’s about it. He’s a player. In the early 80’s, that was a thing.

But again, it’s like if someone from the film crew said Lando’s favorite flavor of pizza was the Star Wars equivalent of hawaiian and the media kept talking about it because it’s great news for people who like pineapple on their pizza, especially when doing so is controversial.

I’m not even planning on seeing the movie so I really don’t have a dog in this fight.

I just think it’s funny when chryon complains about someone who isn’t straight making him feel uncomfortable.

And complaining about everyone talking about it still counts.

and i just think its funny that chyron is complaining about it being a topic du jour, and yet him complaining about it just contributes to it being in the news.

I hadn’t even heard of this until he complained about it.

Who the fuck cares if no previous books or comics suggested it. They threw all that stuff out years ago.

The media craziness is to be expected. You see media craziness for literally everything involving SW. I’d wager I’ve seen less “Lando is Pansexual” headlines than “New Character Therm Scissorpunch has Best Star Wars Name Ever” headlines.

The “pandering” complaint is stupid at this point. None of us know how it is integrated into the film. It’s impossible to legitimately complain that it is “pandering” at this point. You can speculate that it is, but you can’t complain.

Which is why I’m bitching about it in here rather than debating the significance of it in the General forum. For myself, my opinion is who cares whether he is or not?

You seem to.

What about that precludes him from being pansexual?

Chyron, most of us will agree with you that if it is not in the movie, then it is pretty much useless pandering. All I’m saying is if it is in the movie, then I would have no qualms about it.

If it’s in the movie, I’d tip my hat to them for going there. A fine development for the character that makes sense.

Not to mention that Lando’s pansexuality is just the bottom of the barrel in terms of Star Wars ideas at this point.

Billy Dee Williams certainly didn’t play the character like he’d bang anything that moves. Doesn’t mean that’s not who the character is today, but making him pansexual seems a bit convenient given current discussions around gender and sexuality.

I don’t care either way because I think most of the new stuff isn’t worth watching regardless. There’s too much genuinely good sci-fi/fantasy out there now to focus my energies on a franchise that wrecked its main characters and replaced them with cardboard. I have to dig through Star Wars now to find the good parts, which just isn’t the relationship I want to have with my entertainment.

I’d like to see a debate between Billy Dee Williams and Donald Glover over whether Lando is pansexual or not. Have them both crack open an ice-cold Colt 45 and go back and forth a bit.

I think it’s just a corporate way to throw a bone to people asking for real stories involving sexuality while simultaneously not actually doing that.

More like the screenwriters trying to be “subversive” and get some street cred, while the suits pat them on the head and let them get away with it as long as it doesn’t cost them money.
