I think people misuse the word “pointless” when it comes to “pointless fan service.” A lot of people see fan service and assume automatically that it must be “pointless.” In my mind, pointless fan service is a thing that happens in service of only the fans, and not the story. If it can do both, it’s no longer pointless.
Bad fan service is when it’s checklist storytelling - and here we have Ponda Baba, and next we have this, and then that, etc. One of the worst for me is at the end of Rogue One when they kill the whole crew. Most of those deaths don’t have any meaning or purpose in regards to the story, they just kill them to satisfy fans looking for a “dark” and “mature” Star Wars movie.
Solo could easily fall into this trap, but in my mind, stuff like “winning the Falcon” sounds like a plot point, rather than something that happens just for the sake of it. We’ll see, I guess.
