Canada Day marks the signing of the British North America Act, a document creating the Dominion of Canada and essentially serving as the country's first constitution, on 1 July 1867. Prior to the so-called 'repatriation' of the Constitution in 1982, it was known as Dominion Day. I say so-called, because the repatriation introduced the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which is what made it so easy to steamroller same-sex marriage through Parliament and into law recently. I will say nothing further on the subject, since it only brings back nightmares of my first year in law school.
