The problem, though, is that I haven’t seen any of these brash statements. At least not ones that actually matter. Tyson’s attempt at a witty tweet about sex being enjoyable didn’t take into account all species, but that’s more an indictment on Twitter and how much it sucks for dumbing everything down to 140 characters. The most offensive one to me was NDT’s tacit defense of Scientology. That wasn’t brash. It was a PC attempt to not offend anyone, not even Scientologists. I also don’t really get what Nye is so horribly wrong about because no one’s told me. His show being terrible doesn’t mean that he’s not intelligent or is wrong about everything.

Seriously though, Joe Rogan played an electrician on NewsRadio…which is the only reason I’m familiar with him. Turns out he was an MMA fighter, then an MMA commentator, host of some dumb network challenge show many years ago, and I guess supposedly is a stand-up comedian and podcast host. Only stuff I’ve ever heard from him outside of NewsRadio makes me think he’s just a dumb jock meathead.

EXACTLY

It’s the most popular podcast on Earth. Or at least close with over 16 million downloads a month, and that’s not including that each show gets about a million views at least when uploaded on Youtube.

My Little Pony is also super popular.

The difference is that My Little Pony is devoid of any intellectual stimulation or integrity of any kind and has absolutely no value.

Having seen MLP but not heard his podcast, I’m still comfortable assuming you’ve got that backwards, despite how low that bar is.

Also, I blame the existence of My Little Pony on parents that let their kids watch it. Last I checked kids can’t watch bad shows when they don’t have access to cable.

Last I checked you have no kids.

We let our kids watch it on occasion. It does provide some good lessons to our girls.

What does this mean? That podcast has interviews with interesting people. Some of it sucks, when the guest sucks, but when the guest is good it’s worth listening to.

And thank Christ for that. I’m not a parent and I’m sure I’d be horrible at it, but I definitely would not tolerate bad shows if I were in the room, but that’s just because I wouldn’t want to watch it.

There’s good lessons in shows with less pink talking animals in them.

It means I’ve heard enough of Joe Rogan to doubt you, and I just explained MLP above.

It’s not good because of Joe Rogan. It’s good because it’s just a platform for his guests to speak. Basically, he’ll get guests on his show and let them talk conversationally. When someone like NDT, an ex-cop turned activist, a historian, former cult members, or good comedians it can be really interesting. When it’s a shit guest, the show sucks. It isn’t like Fear Factor or anything.

Cool.

I’ll look for parenting advice elsewhere though.

I’m not giving parenting advice. I’ve never given you any advice. I admitted that I would be a shit parent and I’m sure any child raised by me would grow up to be a total disaster.

Oh sorry, you weren’t giving me advice, you were just calling me a problem.

I didn’t say you were a problem. It’s an objective fact that kids shows exist because kids watch them.

I’m wary of putting kids in front of screens, more so handheld devices. And not that I didn’t watch a tremendous amount of TV growing up. I think Sesame Street and Mister Rogers are good for kids. Don’t know about MLP.

I’m not opposed to screens. Kids are often a lot quieter when they’re staring at a monitor. I watched a lot of rented video tapes back when I was little and particularly enjoyed the violent ones.

How is that wrong? If no one watched these shows, I don’t think the networks would be producing them.
