The high functioning autistic thread

Yup I’m high autistic. I have no idea how the hell social cues work.

I can’t speak to those specifically (can’t even identify the first), but I seriously doubt The Big Bang Theory has a well-nuanced take on the subject.

My wife used to watch a show that she said had a decently-written character. Parenthood maybe?

Sometimes I wonder if I’m autistic. I was inordinately slow as a child; I didn’t learn how to tie my shoes until the 5th grade — and even then, not correctly — and I didn’t know how to count change until after I was expelled from high school.

Our daughter was diagnosed when she was like three or four. The pediatrician referred us to a University testing program which confirmed it.

Dunno if it’s too late at some point though.

Almost all of my worst social and mental defects came about when I hit my head as a young teenager.

Have you tried hitting it again? Maybe it’s like an on/off switch

I’m not sure how that’s relevant to this thread but thanks for sharing it.

It’s relevant because I’ve been called autistic before by people trying to insult me but I don’t think that’s the case because most of my supposedly autistic symptoms developed later in life and, I think, from a specific incident. I guess I could’ve said that but I forgot. If you would’ve bothered to read my mind then you’d know all that.

Lol.

Anyone who tries to insult someone else by calling them autistic is an asshole, full stop.

Even though I’m good at most things, I have a math deficit due to me being on the spectrum which has restricted me to only being able to do the 1st-4th-grade math. This is making finding a job very frustrating.

I have a friend from high school who was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome.

Actually, I have two friends who are, but the girl I know from college is just… quirky. My high school friend is very… I don’t know. He’s slightly lower on the spectrum I guess. I can only hang out with him for so long before my emotional tank is on E and I have to take a break. I also understand that nuance is often lost on him, and so I feel it necessary to be more direct, but I also don’t want to be rude. Meanwhile, he’s direct to the point of rudeness but I don’t think he knows he’s being rude. I’m not sure if he doesn’t know or if he can’t know, but to tell him he’s being rude would then be me being rude.

I’m not venting, I’m just saying as a friend of someone with high-functioning austism it’s very… confusing and awkward for me on occasion. I’m no master of social nuance myself and so I don’t really know how to deal with it when it happens.

Reading, writing, helping others, helping out with kids, playing with dogs and cats, learning about nerdy things like Star Wars, voice acting, acting, playing Age Of Mythology and most recently baking.

I have friends who are lower and higher on the spectrum. Everyone is different, hence the spectrum thing.

I wouldn’t put this on a resume.

Actually I’ve heard that game development is not an uncommon field for some high-functioning autistic people to go into. Maybe it could be relevant!
