Don't blame that on this version of the movie. The bit about diseases killing the aliens(not having seen this version yet, I could be wrong) , came from the book and was repeated in every version since. Blame H.G. Wells for that, not this movie.
btw: I highly recomend the Radio version by Orson Wells
Orson Welles was the coolest. He was in the Transformers movie.
