Hey guys so I just stumbled upon this video by some guy on youtube who fixed some of the compositing shots that sadly were not executed well in the final versions.

I personally really love Alien 3, and im wondering if anyone is interested in actually fixing up the entire film.
I think what is really needed it to get David Fincher to go back and give us his version or proper vision.
The CGI to blend is nice but it won’t make the film much better. It would need to have Fincher do a proper edit.
Yeah it is quite a good film but it needs Fincher to go back and do a job on it. I would rather this than another alien film.
It’s not CGI, those are practical effects optically composted.

Sadly, that will never happen. Closest we’re going to get on an official release is the assembly cut.
Fincher did consider it… But yeah backed away and after having a little read perhaps he never got to actually shoot all the scenes for his vision. Either way what an amazing director. He must of felt it was impossible.
I think the only way to get get Fincher’s full vision is to travel back in time and let him finish and keep the suits off of his back. I don’t believe he ever got to fully finish the film all the way to the end.
The Assembly Cut is pretty darn good and it has redeemed the film in many aspects.

So he/she has spent 5 minutes with desktop tools to superficially improve the matching of colour and contrast, then dismissed the work of the original effects artists as ‘inexperienced or lazy’ - entirely disregarding how complex, difficult and ambitious these composites were in the pre-digital age.

I can’t see any difference in either colour or contrast between the original and fixed footage from that YouTube clip, even with the slow motion footage. Am I missing something obvious between the two versions shown?

Don’t worry, I thought the same thing at first! You’re really not missing anything because there’s practically nothing to miss. Basically the person just slightly changed the color of the xenomorph, and when I say slightly I mean slightly. It’s a VERY minor change. What really bugs me is that the uploader makes it sound like some profound fix. I was thinking that he/she would at least try and soften the matte lines, but nope!

I watched the film again a couple of nights ago (good old theatrical cut). It’s remarkable how effective some of the shots are, considering that it shouldn’t work at all. Matting an miniature puppet creature into live action and having it interact with actors? Pretty ballsy stuff.
