If I remember correctly he was (comic logic disclaimer here..

) a clone of Luthor that Luthor had placed his mind into to have a younger healthier body... or something like that. Its been a while since I read it though...

Speaking of, though I was less than impressed by the actual issues leading up to the 'death' of Superman, the 'Funeral for a Friend' issues that followed were truly moving.
