Info Wanted: A question for VIII Fan Editors - re working in 4K...

First of all, let me say what an incredible community this is! I started here probably 5 years ago hearing about the amazing work on Harmy’s Despecialized OT and now I see all the talent going into fan edits. Really well done and official-looking (and sounding)! So thank you all for you dedication and hard work. It really is something to be proud of 😃

Now that my fangirl-ing is out of the way, Episode VIII fan edits are no doubt being worked on as we speak. It REALLY MUST be done. What a sorry piece of the Star Wars franchise as-is 😦

My question for you VIII Editors is this: Will you be working with the 4K UHD source when possible? 8 is the first movie to be available in such phenomenally high resolution.

If you aren’t, why not if you don’t mind me asking? If it has to do with ripping the UHD disks, I can forward you info to make it happen quite easily.

I am doing a 2 in one edit of TFA and TLJ using a 1080p source. Once I finish I will most likely put out just the TLJ portion in 4k. Not HDR my computer can’t handle that sadly.

As far as I’m aware the bonus materials and things are at max 1080p (or 1920 x 800 I think SW movies are), so it’d be defined by that. I’ll be using the 4K source down to 1080p wherever possible though.

I plan on using the regular BluRay as my source, because I know my machine can handle it, the handful of deleted scenes I hope to use are presented in 1080p, and I cannot imagine ever playing it on a screen on which I could appreciate the difference in resolution.
Also I’m a curmudgeon.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I don’t know how to rip 4K Blu-rays and can’t find anything online to help, so it’ll just be the normal Blu for me. Sucks, because it would be really useful for cropping out Phasma in my edit.

If anyone could do that for me, that’d be awesome, pls thx.

I just don’t see the point in such high resolutions. Also, I want a consistent resolution for all the movies, and they’re not all available in 4K.

guess you’re stuck with 2k forever then

Yeah but even if the release would stay in 1080p having a 4k source would be useful because you could crop and reframe shots while still having 1080p quality. You know, like handman just said.

Based on the amount of grain in the film there’s not a huge difference between upscaled 1080p and native 4K in this case, so just using the regular blu-ray should be fine.

A nice trick for unnoticeably upscaling shots is to de-noise it, upscale it and then apply noise again. I depends on the quality of the de-noising and upscaling algorithms, though.

I’m planning on using normal Blu-ray. I don’t have the equipment to work with 4K.

I do agree about using to crop shots.
