Lightsaber colourization

I'm not an "original" fan....I was born in 1987, but I am a huge supporter in seeing the original original trilogy released. However, I was watching the original trailer the other day and noticed that Darth Vader's lightsaber was white. I soon found out that all the lightsabers in the original film were white. When did the lightsabers get colourized? Just wondering because I also noticed in the trailer for Return of the Jedi that the lightsabers were red and blue. Does anyone know when the change was made and why?

Uh... I'm pretty sure that's not true. The trailer probably was just not finished. Can anyone else shed some light on the subject?

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Star Wars was running way behind on hitting it's opening date and they put out that trailer with unfinished effects on it. Hence the white sabers. They were always going to be colorized. This is just so they could put something out.

I knew that new DVD set was going to be good for something.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought it was weird that the "uncolourized" lightsaber never made an appearance in any documentary I've seen....but seeing as it never existed, it all makes sense now.

And as for the blue saber in the Return of the Jedi trailer, that was just a rush job to, most likely, keep from ruining the surprise of Luke's new lightsaber.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

The colors in ANH were never quite brite enough though. At least not compared to the rest of the movies.

I believe the saber was made green in ROTJ later on in the piece, because of issues with the blue lightsaber had with the blue sky.

The lightsabers in ANH were very hit and miss - Obi-Wan and Lukes' looked fine in the earlier scenes, but the Falcon scene has always been dodgy and the duel has a lot of 'problems'. I still think the DVD only made things worse - I happened to like that massively over exposed look that the lightsabers had. It made 'em look bright, unlike in Revenge of the Sith.

I never thought the colour in Luke's was 'faded', I just genuinely thought it was supposed to be closer to turqoise than Obi-Wan's. The slight difference was a good idea in my opinion. It's the same way that Vader's isn't actually red, it's got more magenta.

LUKE: Dad, where are your eyebrows?

There have also been scenes for years in the original trilogy (OT) in SW where DV's sabre is white - take a look at the scene after when Ben is despatched and the doors close prior to the Falcon leaving. There is a white sabre even in the SE! The 2004 DVD versions this was finally corrected!! There are also also some other odd colour-swapping effects in the OT too during the Ben/DV duel (for some frames Ben's sabre turns red and darth's to blue!), but these have all been corrected in the DVD release.
