I would like to bitch about how when you watch digital movies from say Amazon the audio is presented in a half assed 2.0 mix down that isn’t even slightly optimized. It sounds like they literally just mixed all the channels together and left it. I watched last jedi last night and the sound was horrible. No presence, dull, no bottom, no surround presence when played in Pro Logic. I’m not arguing that 2.0 surround is better than 5.1, but if you’re going to present it in 2.0 you could at least down mix it properly as that would not only give it surround but also fix the problem of no bottom and no presence due to the way it would mix everything. The laser disc mixes for the original trilogy sound better, why? Because they were down mixed from 4/6 channel sources but with actual care put in to a 2.0 result. This can be achieved automatically with free software ffs. Even if you are actually listening with last 2.0 speakers it would still sound better so I don’t see why they can’t take the minimal effort to do so. Even if not a ton of people use up mixing surround its not like it would hurt the experience for anyone else, it would likely make it sound better.
