Meh. I don’t love or hate Favreau. I like the idea of a live action series in general, but I’m going to need some more specifics before I get excited. I will say, and I’m not blaming any of these directors themselves, that I’m more than a little dismayed by the way that Disney’s ostensible commitment to diversity doesn’t seem to extend beyond actors. By my count, Favreau is the twelfth white male to head one of these projects since the Disney buyout (fourteenth if you count JJ and Rian twice). Someone over there has to understand how this looks.

Yeah, it’s looking not great. Admittedly, it looks better when you note that only 4 have actually completed their films, and when you realize that in terms of directors, there’s only two future ones on the docket and they’re both returning players. The silver lining is that Favreau and Weiss/Benioff are only writer/producers, which means that even those projects (and Rian’s other films) still have the chance to hire more diverse creatives. Let’s hope they do.

As for the show itself, it’s about time this happened, considering all those years Lucas hyped up live action SW TV. As you said, it’s hard to get too excited though, not knowing what it’s about. What a strange time we live in where there a three new Star Wars series in the pipeline, two film series and one TV series, and we know nothing about their subject matter beyond “a galaxy far, far away.” Rian’s is almost certainly the one I’m most interested in as a much prefer film to TV, and he’s easily the most talented of those four (and he’s already proven he can handle SW very well).
