“Re-Making Magic DVD” (My Little Project on the CD-ROM “Making Magic”)

Hi,

Just wanted to fill you all in on a little project I have been working on. It was very frustrating for me that I have not been able to use my CD-ROM “Making Magic” on my Windows XP system. “Making Magic” was included as a bonus CD-ROM in one of the Lucasarts re-issue game bundles a few years ago, and does not work with newer operating systems.

What I have done is make a high quality VGA to S-Video capture of all the CD-ROM content, and I am now in the final stages of re-assembling it all using Adobe Premiere Pro 6.0, Adobe Encore-DVD and TMPGEnc encoder. The format of my “Re-Making Magic DVD" will almost exactly match the one on the original CD-ROM, and the video quality is very close to the original. The hard part of this project so far has been re-constructing the menus and the menu buttons. It has been slow going as I am also learning the Encore DVD software at the same time.

I know that most of the content on this title is in the realm of the Special Editions, but there is some out-take footage of the original Han & Jabba scene from Star Wars that cannot be found anyplace else. I also placed the Star Wars lost scenes from the “Behind the Magic” CD-ROM as a little Easter Egg off one of the menus. So with that content included, this title should fall into the Original Trilogy Preservation category.

Any Comments?

It sounds good to me.

I found the whole Making Magic CD to be a most frustrating experience on the PC as most times it crashed on many of my computer set ups and when it worked, the resolution was way out!!

Looking forward to seeing your results.

Hey- sounds sweet! Was this disc included in a set that had about 5 games in a big open box (I think Sam & Max, the Millenium Falcon game whatever it was called, etc)?

Thanks either way as it sounds like another must have!

"Making Magic" was from the The LucasArts Archives Volume II: The Star Wars Collection"

It included Rebel Assault, Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire, Dark Forces(archive version with only the first three levels), TIE Fighter, and The Making Magic disc.

I have the Making Magic CD-Rom and it works fine with XP. I don't know why yours wouldn't. If you want, I could send you a copy of my disk and see if it works on your system. It might save you some work.

Let me know.

It works on my XP laptop as well. I haven't tried it with Win2000 yet.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I will finish this project up for the experience if nothing else.

You guys are talking about the "Making Magic" CD-ROM working with XP and not the "Behind the magic" CD-ROM right?

I was able to get "Behind the Magic" Working with XP, but "Making Magic" is still no go. It says it needs DOS to run.

I've got both CDs, Behind the Magic and Making the Magic, and they both play fine on my computer. I don't know why your computer is putting up a fuss about it.

Well, the offer still stands if you need it man.

Sounds cool, and will be worth a look for everyone that can't get it to run.
In general, with a lot of old software you may need to put a shortcut on the desktop and set the 'compatability' where you can effectively tell XP to run the software as if it was running under Windows 95. This often gets 'broken' software to work.

The beauty is we can finally run the CD-Rom on the telly now!

Hey, GuruKenn!

Sounds like a great project! I'd be down for a copy when finished.

By the way, you never answered my PM to you. I can still get you the TR47 RowMan Remix bonus discs if you want them.

Hi,

This is GuruKenn (With new I.D.).

Tonight I am burning the first test DVD of "Re-Making Magic".

Thanks for the offer to help. I will need someone to watch the thing.

Hi,

The DVD test showed some problems with the video encoding I had done. I was using TMPGEnc, but now I just now got myself CCE Basic. I want to re-do the motoin video stuff now all with CCE Basic. That should not take long as I am working hard on this and using two computers to encode. The rest of the DVD seems to be working just fine. A few minor tweeks and I think it's all done. More to come...

I found it weird that you're using a VGA to s-video capture. Is there any way to extract the actual video files from the CD-ROM's contents? (I'm presuming it's in Quicktime).

ocpmovie's Return of the Ewok DVD has all of the CD-ROM deleted scenes in their original form.
