1997 Special Edition Audio Mixes, GOUT-Synced (Released) — Page 2

Just throwing this out there, as it may work alright - The TFM Audio Tool offers simple DTS encoding capabilities that may achieve what you’re looking for.

If you pm me the lossless files, I’ll encode them.

Otherwise, I suggest 2 variants of the DTS file.

File Based Playback (Computer): 16 bit, 44.1khz - Closest to original source.
DVD/BD Based Playback: 16bit, 48khz

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

The source HAL is working from had already been converted to 48kHz for DVD compatibility, if I’m not mistaken.

I’ve got the bugs worked out of my DTS encodes already. They still read as 24-bit in MediaInfo, but I’ve been assured by multiple people that know their stuff that this isn’t an issue for various reasons, the most important of which being that DVD spec supports DTS up to 24-bit (though I’ve also been told from multiple sources that bit depth isn’t really a thing with lossy codecs).

But if you wanna take a stab at it and HAL’s willing to send you the lossless files, I won’t be offended. 😃

I think ChainsawAsh has got this one wrangled, but I appreciate the offer for help. He is right that my source has already been processed to be more suitable for home video.

Some of these issues might as well be found in your PT final versions I guess ?

No, it was just something I neglected this time. Fortunately. It’s something I’d do at the beginning as I prepare the timeline, roughly analogous to forgetting to plug a mic in.

V2 is up in the same places. Seek it out on the 'spleen or Reddit. Each of these places also contain a link to get lossless output files for anyone who wants to mess with these.

As before, if anyone runs into issues with the DTS encodes, let me or HAL know. I think we got it this time, though.

Oh that’s great, thanks again ! … You know what’s my next question is gonna be : something about lossless output files such as these for roman numerals with no “V” episodes 😃 (in due time, of course !)

You’ll get those, too. Have I ever not delivered for you before?

Actually, 24-bit is possible on DVD with DTS.
Many official DVDs are 24-bit DTS.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

I have to ask… is there any intention of making a version of the ROTJ SE mix that syncs to the 4K83?

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

That is what the GOUT-sync convention was supposed to ensure.

However, this seems like a worthwhile exception. I’ll do it, exporting from my original project files. No ETA, though.

Oh I didn’t know 4k83 wasn’t GOUT-sync 😕

There were apparently two additional frames in the establishing shot of the fleet at Sullust, rendering any ROTJ GOUT sync audio distractingly out of sync for the second half of the movie.

I really do like watching the Star Wars trilogy with these audio tracks (the one for ESB in particular because the 97 mix didn’t have the altered musical transitions all previous mixes did; I much prefer the original cues as John Williams recorded them).

If you have VLC, put it 50 ms ahead. That’ll put it roughly one frame early before the frames in question, roughly one frame late before the frames, and I personally can’t tell the difference unless it’s more than like 75 ms out of sync.

It’s really only two frames? Ugh, why break with the GOUT sync for that? I’ll still do it, though.

Because it’s a complete print and they didn’t want to throw away two frames from a complete print just to maintain GOUT sync.

I can see both sides of the argument, really.

Currently exporting the SE ROTJ audio, synced to 4K83. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the only thing I had to do to the project timeline from the GOUT sync was to undo trimming the audio for the frames the 4K83 used which the GOUT omitted.

Everything but the DTS encode for the 4K83-synced release is in the Google Drive directory, and once I get the DTS encode from Ash it’ll appear there, too. It’ll also appear on the 'spleen.

Now I just need to get a 5.1 setup so I can listen to these in their full glory…
