It's not father's day over here for some cultural/commercial reasons. This was a day created by greeting cards companies in the 40s so they could sell more cards in a time of the year where they usually didn't. It's a commercial "holiday", and if God ever makes the mistake to let me be a father, I'd ask my kid(s) not to buy me anything at all.

while i agree that there are many holidays that are created by the card companies, I think that Father's Day, Mother's Day, and the like should be celebrated...but I dont think its necessary to 'buy' them anything because thats not what the Day is really supposed to be about, and while some/most/all(?) people i think appreciate that card (a symbolism of appreciation is all it really is) what the really appreciate more is for you to just show them that you care and that you really do appreciate all that they do for you. Remember the (badly) hand drawn card you gave your mom/dad when you were 5 years old and how that was enough to make your parents happy, they didnt need expensive gifts and such.

I wasnt able to go to my parents on Father's day because of the distance I now live from them, but I spent about an hour+ talking on the phone with my dad about nothing in particular.

I think think the concept of holidays like this are good, its really just the commercialization that needs to go.

I totally agree. We should talk to our loved ones and say how much we care about them, and not buy gifts because companies want you to spend money...

hey! I buy gifts and cards for my parents on Mother's day and Father's day to show them that I love them and to thank them for all that they have done for me. That companies get my money doesn't matter to me. Making my parents and grandparent happy is what is important.

Let us not forget Sonday every week (no, it's not a typographical error). If you're a parent, be sure to honor thy son on Sonday. Us sons are very special people. We're so special, that we have the first day of the week, every week. They just misspell it on the calendars, that's all.

Warbler, so do I. I do give my mom and dad gifts, but they don't think the way I do. It's ok by me, I don't mind buying them things, I actually like it. BUT... having the point of view I do, I refuse to accept anything at all. I have repeatedly told family and friends that I don't want them to give me things for birthday, I don't belive buying stuff is a way to show people we care. To me, a simple gesture like wishing me a happy birthday with a hug is waaay better than any $300 gift. I'm more of an emotional person than a material one, regarding other people.

well, I still see nothing wrong with buying my parents cards and gifts on Mothers day and Fathers day, even if the holidays were invented by card companies. I say good mothers and fathers deserve these holidays.

They do deserve it, and they deserve MUCH more, I was just saying that the whole meaning behind these days were bought off and commercialized by corporations.

For that I apologise. I tend to express my insane political views in the most inapropriated moments. Sorry.

No, actually, I apologize. I did not mean to single you out. I kind of meant it about the post in general.

Exactly, they do deserve it, but why should we show our affection to our parents/do things for them only 'once' a year, or only on special holidays.

yeah, sorry Switch (and any fathers out there), didnt mean to (help) turn your thread into a debate or anything...Hope you all had a great fathers day, and hope you all realize that you really are appreciated on more than just that one day of the year (even if it doesnt always appear that way)

where did I say that I only do things for them once a year or only on special holidays? I always try to show my affections to my parents year round. It is just that on days like Father's Day I try to do even more. Sorry but a can't afford to give my a father and mother gifts and cards 365 days a year, I leave that to the Holidays. I don't get what the big problem is about setting aside a day to honor somthing. It doesn't mean we ignore it the rest of the year. It just means that on that day, we give it extra special attention. I don't see the problen. And if the card companies money off it, I don't care one way or the other.

Warb, I wasnt saying you dont. But my point is that there are people that dont show their affection/appreciation year round. Im all for honor them even more once a year...as long as they are honored all year as well.
