Good job on the scan, could use some basic cleanup. But it should be an easy job. Looking forward to this.

Looks amazing! Can’t wait to see this

It looks fantastic! I can’t wait, as it’s one of my favorite Bond films and probably the one boasting the best John Barry score alongside “A View to a Kill”.

Timothy Dalton is very underrated as Bond.

Amazing. Every word of what you just said was right. I agree completely 😃

Looking at the print, the SE DVD and the Bluray, I find myself humming that “One of these things is not like the others” song from Sesame Street…

What you are looking at here is a frame from the Living Daylights, Reel 1 - part of the Exercise on Gibraltar. I find it interesting for two reasons:

  1. It shows the relative resolution of each medium (SE DVD in the center @ 100%, then the BD @ 100%, then the print scan).
  2. For the most part, the DVD and the Print agree on the colors, while the Blu-ray is often quite different.

Absolutely!!!
I’d say this essentially confirms that the video sourced HD masters are likely from IPs that weren’t going to match the release prints anyway then compounded by pitiful lackluster regrading by Lowry.

Also of note is that the LD release seems to have more color in the opening but then calms down later. The closest to the HD Master is actually the old pan and scan release oddly.

Lowry did a good job on most of the Sean Connery films, but they clearly were not given the time and resources needed to do the best job for all (then) 22 Bond films. That’s not their fault and I wouldn’t blame the restorers, the blame lies solely with the distributor, MGM (and EON if they had input), for deciding to do a rushed job. Also the US Kodak prints probably looked a bit different to the UK Fuji prints.

Looking amazing Williarob. Let’s hope you eventually find a 35mm print of GoldenEye in excellent condition, which is IMO the worst looking of all the James Bond movies.

If you want to buy it, I can arrange to get it scanned, and clean it up a bit.

The blu-ray looks very cold, as if Lowry wanted to give it a more sleeker and modern look.

Ohh yes! I would love to see a “GoldenEye” restoration (or “The Spy Who Loved Me” and “Moonraker” even). The blu-ray looks cropped and DNRed to death.

It looks like the GoldenEye print is no longer on sale, which is a real shame. I can’t afford any of this and can only hope for someone to come across another 35mm print in good condition, scan and upload the movie.

I finally had some time to render out the raw scan in a watchable format! This is completely unrestored and uncropped, with no color correction, no grain or noise reduction, no sharpening, no deflickering, and any missing frames are still missing. Includes only the 35mm Theatrical optical audio.

Awesome. I like these raw looking scans. It’s basically like the Grindhouse of the ROTJ and ESB scans, correct?

Is it available for sharing? I am not familiar with the etiquette here, pardon my ignorance.

Yes, it’s basically just a Grindhouse version - though apart from having plenty of dirt and dust at the reel changes, this one is very clean.

Send me a PM if you would like to check it out.

There are some frames missing so it has a few gaps, but if you’re interested, send me a PM.

I have a request when available. My favorite scene is when Bond is in Pushkin’s Hotel room. The acting from Dalton and Davis are on point. Barry’s build up of using music as tension just adds to it. I would live to see how that looks in 35mm.

All my life as I looked away to the future, to the horizon. Never in my mind did I know where I was, what I was doing.

I noticed there’s more picture on the left and right sides on the 35mm version. also the background score is a bit louder on the optical track as it should, I found it too quiet in the 5.1 mix. kinda want my money back for the blurays

Hypothetically, if I were to buy the Goldeneye print, how should I store it?

The GoldenEye project absolutely needs to gain more traction, after all it is the worst looking of the BDs.
