The trick is not picking arcs just because you like them or because they’re good (then you’ll end up with 9 films like smudger9), but picking arcs that develop Anakin and Obi-Wan as characters and enhance or add to things already present in AOTC and ROTS.

Which is what I’ve been doing. I picked arcs that develop the Anakin/Ahsoka relationship, show the brotherly relationship between Anakin & Obi-wan, keep Padme involved, and setup Anakin’s choices in ROTS.

I explicitly rejected arcs that do not feature at least 3 of the 4 main characters interacting in some meaningful way, and any arcs that do not directly answer questions raised by the films. This means I left out some of my personal favorites like Padawan Lost & Children of the Force.

Umbara arc, final ashoka arc, and second battle of Geonosis all develop Anakin as a character.

But the Zygerian slaver arc develops him far more effectively and ties directly into the films with the discussion of Anakin’s past which is why I chose that.

Umbara arc barely has Anakin in it.

Yup. Which is why I chose to leave it out. That and I was really disappointed that the one Jedi Master we see who has become disillusioned with the war turned to the darkside. It was my least favorite thing to happen actually.

Yes but they constantly talk about Anakin and how great he is. Also Umbara makes you feel for the clones. Why can’t it be a subplot while anakin is searching for Ashoka

Too much screentime, and screentime is at a premium when you’re editing 6 seasons down into three 2-hour movies.

Look, the Umbara arc is great, possibly the best of the series, but it doesn’t fit if you’re trying to make a trilogy between II and III that sets up Obi-Wan and Anakin’s relationship, Anakin’s distrust of the Jedi and jealousy around Padme, and explains important things not elaborated on in the films like Sifo-Dyas and Force ghosts.

If the idea were to do more than three movies? Sure, Umbara would be a good choice. But there’s just not enough time to include something that’s just a distraction from the primary goals of the edit(s).

Pretty much.

I considered it. But since it’s a four episode arc I felt it wasn’t going to work. And even though it is one of the best arcs in the series, it doesn’t really connect to the films in any real way, other than Anakin’s distrust & the kidnapping plot.

The slaver arc shows Anakin’s concern for Obi-wan just as clearly while also directly connecting to events & themes in the PT. And his distrust of the council is also effectively communicated via the final Ahsoka arc.

EDIT: I’m looking at restructuring my current third act to A) have Ventress somehow be present for or involved with in some way the 2nd battle of Geonosis, and B) have the bit where Anakin & Luminara rescue Ahsoka & Barriss happen after the capture of Poggle. That way the emotional climax is also the main climax and the film doesn’t carry on needlessly after that. I’m also hoping that maybe I can use the bit from Brain Invaders where the two padawans wake up in the med chamber and have that happen after the cave-in instead.

We’ll see.
