Coming from a non-English speaking country I’m all in for the soft subs. My dad watched Star Wars in Italy in 1977 and later at some point in the 1980’s in Brazil, with my mom, and according to him there were no hard subs. He could be wrong though. When I was watching v2.7 with him last year the subtitles bothered him a little bit, since he doesn’t speak English and it’s basically more text on the screen, nothing more than useless visual information, almost som sort of pollution.
If you want the more Blu-Ray-y approach, I’d say go for the soft subs. But if the goal is still to be as true as you possibly can to the (American) theatrical version, then hard subs it is.
