The only humor I feel is really, undoubtedly out of place and truly bad is the “your mom” joke at the beginning.

This was… horrendous

That’s the worst one.

My favorite joke might be when Hux says “I’ll take it in my quarters” and giant angry Snoke appears.

Worst line was the one about the “big ass door.”

See, that one didn’t bother me at all. I didn’t even notice it until someone here brought it up.

I notice your positivity and I like it.

I notice your positivity towards others’ positivity and I like it.

I see you one positivity and I raise a like. I like it twice.

Is the steam iron gag a problem for you guys? A lot of people who mention that scene say it belongs in Spaceballs, not Star Wars. I don’t have a big problem with it but I might cut it out in my fan edit anyway.

I wasn’t a fan of that bit. Or the cowl line later in the scene.

As I see it it’s a fun gag and beautifully done, but it takes me out of the movie, which is why I would cut it. Instead of making me care more about what’s going on it basically says “gotcha, bet you thought this was an important ship but it was just an iron, anyway, moving on now”.

I enjoyed the iron gag, taking it more of an homage to the coat hanger in Raiders of the Lost Arc than anything else.
Upon reflection later, it is unlike any other sort of scene or moment in any other Star Wars film. I’m not aware of that level of filmmaking-as-the-joke before in that way, probably what makes it feel more like a spoof thing.

But TLJ is all about deconstructing SW anyway, for better or worse. Seems jarring to me personally after TFA, which was a passionate and reverent homage (again, for better or worse).

My stance on revising fan edits.

The coat hanger is similar, but that one affects how you feel about a character. He seems dangerous and evil, but then you see that maybe there’s more to him. And the diversion is deliberately made by the character to intimidate other characters within the movie. But the iron is just an iron with no importance to story or characters and the diversion is purely for the movie viewers.

Looks like the iron is going. Goodbye, clever but odd and pointless sight gag!

I agree with the last two posts. Or three, if I count my own, I guess.

Thanks for clarifying that, Ridley. Put that way, it is a good microcosm for what the movie is.

If there’s a Han Solo memorial service in the deleted scenes, would that place the scene in the time of The Force Awakens or would that mean they held a funeral without Chewie present?

The deleted scenes could change the edit and the opening crawl significantly.

My understanding is that the funeral wasn’t in the script or filmed, but they liked the idea of it so put it in the novelization. The other parts do seem to be deleted scenes, though.

I’d love that.

Btw, here’s something I said on fanedit.org but I think is worth mentionning here also:

Why is everyone feeling the need to open the Rey+Luke sequence exactly where TFA left off?

We don’t need to see Luke toss the saber.

We don’t even need to see the immediate results of Rey meeting Luke in TFA.

The first time we see Rey and Luke since the end of TFA can be… well any scene really. It can be inside the falcon. It can be at the hut. It can be anywhere. We’re not forced to show what happened when Rey gave Luke the lightsaber, it can definitely happen offscreen.

Rey gives Luke his saber, we already know that from watching TFA. Now what’s next? We can open anytime we want. If the Luke lightsaber toss bothers you… don’t show it! And don’t even show any shot from that scene, period! Just Skip it!

Good idea, but if the only thing we know is that Luke got his saber back we’re gonna wonder why he doesn’t have his saber. Maybe it can still work somehow, but I’m not sure.

Personally I’d keep most of that anyway.

It bugs me how many people want to strip all humor out of Star Wars.

Yes, The Last Jedi had some attempts at humor that went too far. But instead of completely taking out those lines, perhaps just trim them a little. For example, the infamous “your mom” joke that Poe makes was too much in my opinion, but I was okay with him joking for a moment saying that he was on hold for Hux. Cut it there.

I didn’t mind “big ass door” or Luke winking. I will say that I thought his brushing off the shoulder wasn’t really appropriate, but again — don’t take out all humor. Give us a good balance.
