Do these animation films need preservation? — Page 4

IMDb says that the cinematic process was spherical, so I think Watership Down was natively widescreen.

I found a 1.33:1 trailer that appeared on some Thorn-EMI UK tapes back in the 80s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0zAejKt-wo

It looks to have extra space at the top and bottom than the modern releases, but less on the sides. Compare this widescreen copy of the same trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji-LqBskNyE

So I stand corrected, it probably was 1.66:1. The only question that remains is if the LD has a 1.66:1 framing that contains all info shown in both the 4x3 and 16x9 transfers.

That is indeed the question.

You made me want to watch Bakshi's LotR! :D

The Jetsons Movie and We’re Back have both had a DVD release in widescreen.

Spielberg’s "Family Dog"series has not come out on DVD, although the pilot episode was originally an Amazing Stories installment.

Heavy Metal has long been on DVD and the Blu Ray is terrific. There are some very minor differences in the soundmix, but it’s unlikely a stereo soundtrack recorded off cable prior to the official 1990’s video release exists. The Japanese Laserdisc is open matte.

Beavis and Butthead Do America has also had a nice DVD release.

Cat’s Don’t Dance has only come out on DVD in full frame.

There are a couple other anime or family films I could add to the list soon as I’m done sorting out my LD collection.

On a very weird matter regarding Family Dog, for some reason it was officially released on DVD by Universal in Brazil (NTSC R4), but it lacks original audio. I’ve actually bought the 2 DVDs years ago and I believe to include all episodes produced. I haven’t watched it yet, but if anyone is interested in sourcing the English audio (and other possible dubs), I could dump the discs.

A film I didn’t read people discussing here is A Goofy Movie. As far as I know, there isn’t a proper release of this film on home video. The NTSC R1 and R4 releases are cropped 4:3 and while the western R2 is anamorphic, there’s the 4% PAL speed-up. Netflix has recently released the movie, but it looks far worse than the Disney Cinemagic HD from German SKY TV.
I’m actually quite curious about the LD, is it letterboxed?

Family Dog: interesting info! It would be quite easy to capture LD audio, and dub it with DVD video… not in the near future, though, but still, do retain the DVDs for a future project! 😉

A Goofy Movie: according to LDDB - http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/06555/4658-AS/Goofy-Movie-A - it is letterbox. Is Netflix version worst than DVD? And, what’s about the HDTV version? If you have it, can you post some screenshots? Possibly also a comparison with DVD and/or Netflix! 😄

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

If anyone has access to a hdtv version it’s quite trivial to match it up with the english audio along with a framerate slowdown.

As for A Goofy Movie the Japanese version release has both the proper framerate and is widescreen.

There are indeed all 10 episodes on those DVDs. And don’t worry, I don’t plan on selling any of my movies.

A Goofy Movie
First, I was wrong, just checked and the PAL DVD is letterboxed, not anamorphic.
I have absolutely no idea how proper slowdown PAL to NTSC. Years ago I tried syncing the PAL DVD to the NTSC audio, spent months on Premiere and VirtualDub trying to figure out a way to make it.
Regarding the screenshots: I can’t rip Netflix, so the screenshot was literally a screenshot of my computer screen. I have no idea why this movie has these uneven black/brown bars on top and under. It doesn’t seem to be aiming to a 1.66:1 AR. And the weird issue on the bottom right, it’s not an artifact from the screenshot, it’s actually there when you’re streaming the video. I don’t have the *.TS from the German broadcast right now, so I took a screenshot from a 720p encode from that broadcast (I’ll get it later). Finally, screenshots from the DVDs were taken with VLC.

And after some googling, I found out that the Japanese DVD came out in 2004 and there hasn’t been a reprint. If anyone can tell me where I can buy it, please let me know. Or if anyone can send me the files, PM me, please. I’ve been looking for a proper release of this movie for over a decade now.
Wait, scrap that. https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d256572935#
It shows that the DVD is 4:3, not widescreen.

I must’ve been misinformed, I distinctly remember someone posting screens and claiming the JP dvd to be widescreen. If you’re able to get a hold of the *.ts I’d be glad to to a framerate conversion and audio sync and send it over in return. I’m not as experienced as spoRv with logo removal but I’ll give that a go afterwards as well.

Edit: Here’s a screen from the PAL DVD:

Don’t know where you got a hold of it in letterbox.

As soon as possible I’ll PM you with the links. I got a *.TS file without that logo.

And it seems like there are 2 distinct PAL releases, then. The one I got is from Portugal and features 8 audio languages. This one is letterboxed.

According to this cover, there’s a British release with another set of languages:
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81jBoYvHUUL.SL1500.jpg
It says it’s widescreen, so probably that’s the version you got. There’s one thing I’m finding strange: I never knew this movie got a 5.1 mixing. The American release is certainly stereo, as is the PAL version I got.

If you’re interested, and have some free time, you could rip the LD audio and send me the RAW/WAV/FLAC files and I can mux them in x264 encodes. Or if there are a larger number of people, I could re-author the DVDs, albeit without changes in the menus, so the audio should be selected by remote.

Wallace and Gromit in The Wrong Trousers original broadcast audio track containing the licensed music still need preserving. The original 1993 VHS has it and I managed to grab a PDTV rip from a 2007 BBC1 broadcast which is as-broadcast from UseNet recently. The only drawback is it has a voice-over talking over some of the end credits. The vital elemants can be inserted into the DVD audio track and muxed with the PAL DVD or the Australian 2016 50i Blu Ray.

EDIT - This has been done now;

Sorry for an old bump, but is the LD release of Cats Don’t Dance still the best quality version of it, or is the 2016 DVD release better quality? I am trying to decide if it’s worth tracking down the LD, or if sticking with the DVD is the best way to go about it.

I know this is a 7 year old post, but hopefully you’re still about! I wanted to ask, on your Letterbox AC3 copy of Disney’s animated Sleeping Beauty, does the scene at about 16:30 show Maleficent kill all her minions? In every new release since the 90’s this scene has been reanimated and edited to show them simply running away. If you have this scene, I believe you might be one of the only people to still have a completely unaltered copy of it, and that is definitely something worth preserving.
