Hey there DE, just wanted to know if you mailed my DVD yet. I didn't get anything this week and so I wanted to make sure there wasn't some trouble with mail again.

Let me know,

Thanks.

I recieved this today and skimmed over it quickly. Alot of great stuff in here. One thing I did notice is that during the 'tractor beam deactivation' scene, the image kinda shakes for some reason. I wonder if it's a bad burn or if anyone else noticed it. Other than that, the video is just so much better (PAL) and the fixes help to NOT date the film.

Couple things though:
Took me this long, but I just realized that the chasm that Obi Wan is in has green lights and the one that Luke is in has white lights. Why is this? I mean, I wouldn't think the Empire would get these green lights for effect?

I noticed you didn't put Wolfman back in. If you need some DVD quality source for that for a future release, let me know.

The WHITE saber still is noticeble, but you've made it look alot better, considering. I think, in the end, we are just going to have to rotoscope that scene. ugh.

All in all, this is the best presentation of Star Wars I have ever seen, and my friends who have been waiting patiently the past two weeks I'm sure will enjoy it as much as I have.

Thanks DE, and your hard work will be rewarded.

I mailed it today, but I don't know when it will get to you.

I did a doubletake on that when I first watched the DVD. But sure enough, those lights have always been green, we've just never seen them so saturated. I don't know why it would have shaken - all I did was apply a some new hues to the overhead matte painting (two shots).

the video is just so much better (PAL)

Didn't I send you the NTSC version? It shouldn't look much different from the region 1 DVDs.

i realize many have asked and many surely want this, but I would love an NTSC copy and will gladly burn five copies to "pay forward" to other folks if someone will send me one copy. (i'm assuming it's single-layer.)

PM me if there's a kind soul willing to help out. thanks!

Oh, I know that the green isn't something you did. However, I wonder which is supposed to be right. I mean, I guess they both could be right but it makes little sense to me.

You used PAL as a source, which has a bit better color timing than the NTSC version. So thus, when you converted PAL to NTSC (which is what you did, right?) it preserved the better image coloring. The Death Star goes from blackish blue (NTSC) to the correct grey (PAL).

Really? That's odd, since the region 1 and 2 DVDs would probably have been mastered from the same source... weird!

Both are 'correct' as looking at some behind the scenes stuff, you can see that the set had both light sources. Very strange indeed.

If you should decide to change it for future releases, I think I've got the 'dead end' Stormtroopers (ala Han runs around the corner into the room) original footage from Empire of Dreams. Just needs some color correction.

Well, guess what..I was wrong. I did the color correction and brightness settings and such for the source material I had and BAM, I realized it came up 6 frames short. The Stormtrooper gets blasted, but we lose him flying to the ground. Grrrr! I thought it would be a simple enough fix.

Come on, Hardcore Legend. This is the guy who put Obi-Wan's face in the hood.

It's probably easily fixed with a simple morph... Or something. Right, Darth Editous?

Kidding.

That would be nice to restore. I always found it odd that the station would put all sections on alert, yet here you have a bunch of troopers in a hanger for supposedly no reason. I somehow doubt they'd need a briefing on how to attack a some rebel force.

Made for IE Forum's Episode III theme month - May 2005.

Just as odd as four Stormtroopers vigorously searching a dead end, with no where for anyone to hide?

Heh. That was a piece of cake after some of the other stuff! But creating six new frames on the end of a scene... morphs wouldn't help you there.

But, to be honest, it never really occured to me to restore the old shot, and now that I think about it I still prefer the SE one.

Oh, I agree. I like the new shot too except that they should have merely removed the old Storm troopers from the shot, have the over Han's shoulder look and put in new CGI ones farther away. The perspective both depth and width of the shot makes it seem like the original troopers are disconnected from the new ones AND they are all crammed into a tiny room, not a giant hanger.

I'm not sure if this was answered before or not, but is this single or duel layered?

It's single layered, but with no menus or extras it still has about 80% the bitrate of the original, and was done at the highest quality encoding I could do - it took 15 hours (with multi-threading).

Allrighty then... Anyone who's downunder and wants a PAL copy PM me, and I'll get one out to you ASAP. I've just received my copy from Darth Editous and I just have to say that it is indeed a masterpiece.

Of course I would have left in Wolfman from the cantina scene but at least the Jabba unpleasantness is behind us once and for all.

I've been watching the forum here for a while, and one thing that I've not seen much of, with a few exceptions, are screenshots of the DVD menus on fan-produced preservation of the OT. I've started a thread under the "Preservation And Fan Edits" heading in hopes that people might post screenshots here just for comparison purposes. Hopefully, I am not the only person interested in the stylistic directions that the folks working on these various productions take, so please, if you have a completed fan preservation, post a few screenshots of what your menus look like, as many of these are often little works of art in and of themselves.

My edit has no menus. It auto-plays and the chapter points are in the same places as the official DVDs (except where scenes are cut, or in one case where a chapter point occured mid-scene, and was moved to the beginning of the next scene).
