Rampant Rationalisation

The Shaw -> Christiansen change

I think I have the best, and most likely explanation of the Shaw -> Chrinstiansen change.
The Shaw ghost was also of Anakin before he turned to the dark side.

The redeemed Anakin Skywalker was a bald head and a torso.

The image of what the pre-vader Anakin changed. Therefore GL, unfortuately, had to alter the force-ghost of the pre-vader anakin to match.

Audio Mix/video errors

Lucas was so busy getting done with RotS and having to meet a deadline for the DVD release that a large amount of the transfer went upsupervised by him, thus, the problems noted. The whole "Deliberate creative decisions" is LFL saving face to keep sales going until a better version is released. As for why it only happened to ANH, somebody wanted to try and mix the audio so that it still was mono and yet had surrounds, tested it on ANH, looked at it, realised it was bad, but didn't have time to fix it. The effect would have been so bad in the Battle of Yavin that the mixer pulled it down to make it less noticable. The color casting is Lowry's algo over-averaging the scenes to give it a grainless look to match the prequels.

Any requests?

The flawed dvd lightsabers in Empire and Jedi is very unconvincing for me. Why on earth did they get away with that.

I can accept the Christensen ghost change, but after all its a ghost. Shaw shows us his great acting skills when the mask is off and the dialogue between him and Luke is brill.

Maybe he changed the ghost for "practical" reasons, but Sir Shaw makes way more sense than Hayden, besides that, it's taking the audience for morons: "look it's the young Anakin, the good one!" "yeah....but where not stupids! we get that the first time with the old one..."

Because according to the ORIGNAL and TRUE story, thates how old Anakin was when he became Darth Vader.

Fine, mister Lucas, while you're at it why dont you replace Lando with will smith?

I don't think they ever actually established Anakin's age when he turned. I never thought of the Shaw ghost as Anakin before the fall. It was the redeemed Anakin. Showing his young form from when he was an uncertain person who fell to evil kind of destroys that. This is the jedi he should have been, not what he was. What's worse is that they used Episode III footage to do so. Hayden wasn't even aware he was in ROTJ until they showed him. It sounds like a last minute decision to me, not Lucas begrudgingly restoring an idea.

Made for IE Forum's Episode III theme month - May 2005.

Anakin's age was never established in the OT, and since I don't read or follow any of the EU nonesense, I'm sure they explained it there.

I've always assumed though that he turned as a young man, and Shaw's force ghost always irked me, seeing this old man who is Darth Vader wearing Jedi robes (where did the old darth vader get it?)

I was skittish and worried about the change with the 2004 SE and was rather indifferent to it until last week. After Revenge of the Sith, I want Hayden to be in ROTJ and not Shaw, it just works much better. Besides, Lucas' rationalization that Anakin only gets to keep his young form (before his turn) is really no worse than the previous rationalization of the older Anakin being the force ghost. It's a matter of how you look at it, but given you guys have made it a mission to attack Lucas about all the changes he's made, It's not surprising you are all blindly following the old version of 'reality' despite the fact that it's really no better than the new one.

Wait, let me backtrack, the new version officially works better now, after Revenge of the Sith.

Considering your signature line, dexters, that was interestingly inflammatory.

A hope your science experiment goes well, friend. Be wary of trolls though.... there are many bridges here for them to reside under.

Depends on how you look at it. After all, I still think the right watch order should be EP4,5,6,1,2,3, otherwise you would spoil infos on the OT. But this means too, that Hayden makes no sense to me in the OT.

But what was the biggest shock, finding out that the "chosen one has been seduced to the dark side, the innocent Chancellor was a Sith Lord, The Jedi are to be exterminated, The Rebublic is dead and an Empire is created. Anakin is burnt and becomes a Mechanical Robot/man or.....................

that Obi Wan lies right to Luke's face in A New Hope or that Darth Vader is Luke's father.

Which one would you pick???????

And what about the Luke/Leia part?
And the "Luke, I'm your father" surprise?

A first time watcher would not have the same experience as I had years ago.

I mentoned those. but i still would like to see them in proper order cos the Sidious/Palpatine revelation is very shocking.

You didn't mention the Leia Part

And I don't care that much for the new trilogy. It it okay as a history lesson - a prequel. For me it supports the OT, not otherwise.

Well the Obi Wan "lies" part is essitional correct.

"Because according to the ORIGNAL and TRUE story, thates how old Anakin was when he became Darth Vader."

First of all, this was simply a mindset change - he wasn't an entirely new personality. Otherwise, there would have been nothing to turn back to, would there?

Secondly, and this is the point everyone seems to miss: He becomes "Anakin Skywalker" again at the end of ROTJ. Thus, Anakin is as old as Anakin is at the end of ROTJ - unless you see his body getting younger as he is talking to Luke.

Point being, it's a stupid change.

You must be the king of being easily shocked. He sounded exactly like the emperor, it took me all of 5 seconds to figure out.

Terrible, terrible movies.

Hmm, I figured it out because the guy in the originals was Emperor Palpatine and the guy in the prequels was Senator/Chancellor Palpatine, but maybe that's just me. ^_^

But, anyway, it really wasn't a huge shock even if I didn't know. One of the few good things George did with the prequels was some vague foreshadowing of Palpatine being evil. Too bad it was something almost everybody already knew...

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Whoa, whoops, sorry, I read that wrong. Actually, at first I (not until around Episode II, actually) didn't realize that Sidious and Palpatine were the same person because it just seemed too obvious. Like I said, I knew Palpatine would become the Emperor, but it just seemed like anybody could wear a black shawl. I was hoping it would be a little more creative than that.

Well, next time you're there, you should take some pics if those Venusians are hot. But, according to George Lucas and Carrie Fisher, there is no lingerie in space.

If Sidious was not Palpatine, I would be VERY surprised. Or disapointed, I'm not sure yet. Either way, fans would bash GL because of this.
