Mean-spirited, too. They kill Leia, but they still have a lingering shot of her corpse in space, cutting away before she wakes up.
It’s a joke, just not a very funny one.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Seen it too. Its not been edited very well but I was surprised by how much of the first half of the film made sense with so much cut out. Its not until the second half that it starts getting really bad.

Some of the worst bits of editing - Even though Poe is made to be the one who sacrifices himself (with c3po next to him in one shot), he jumps back and forward between being in the small ship with Leia and the large ship. Later on, Poe still has a line of dialogue spoken with him off screen, even though he is supposed to be dead.

Also, its edited so that it looks like Luke boards the falcon with Rey to leave the island but when the Falcon takes off, you can clearly see Luke looking up at it flying away. Later on, Luke walks out in front of the walkers for no reason at all, cry’s and then dies in one hit. Obviously, in the actual film he is buying time for the rest of them but due to some of the main characters being killed off, no one is able to have any dialogue with him so it’s more like Luke has just given up on life and just wants to die as soon as they arrive. It’s weird. Has to be a joke.

What a strange world we live in. I loved TLJ, I’m glad they delivered something new into Star Wars canon. I’m a fan of Rose, I don’t care if people think she was a waste of a character. The people saying that have far more than a character from Star Wars to worry about in their lives.

And whether this was a joke or not, it’s completely ridiculous. I’ve been hearing how awful the edit is so clearly this was someone staying up real late in iMovie just giggling to themselves that “i’ve done it, I’ll show them…”

Glad the reaction here is of amazement and disgust. People that do stuff like make a de-feminized version of Star Wars are the exact type of people the Rebels are fighting against. This dude is Hux IRL.

Right? Especially TLJ Hux. He was kinda menacing in TFA but as soon as he opened his mouth this time around my wife went “He sounds like a tool.” And wow was he. I imagine the person making this acting exactly like that. I’m sorry but the problems in the film have nothing to do with women having important roles to play in the war. Sheesh!

This is this exact thing that can be used now against anyone who wants to criticize TLJ and in particular how are handled feminine characters (but all characters as a matter of fact): “you mean people, you’re just like the First Order, bouh ouh ouh…

So it’s a ridiculous statement. And a wrong statement.

I plan on watching it, because I find the idea humorous and enjoy fanedits. I think that getting outraged about this and taking it seriously is empowering the guy who made it, because I know that the person who made it, while talking about it, never indicated anything about it being “ironic” or “a parody”

If you don’t like it, just don’t talk about it and don’t watch it

No offense, kid, but I don’t think you know how to boil water.

Ooookay… except this guy wasn’t motivated by anything other than some pretty blatant misogyny.

I don’t remember the Resistance fighting against muh misogynists last time I watched any of the Star Wars movies, and I don’t remember Hux saying anything about women. Correct me if I’m wrong

So you’re assuming that the antagonists in a fictional story would be the kind of people to have a prejudice against women?

The Empire & First Order are explicitly modeled after Real World fascists which explicitly includes sexism. To pretend otherwise does a disservice to the world and story and that Hux is a literal Neo-fascist it makes no sense to try and claim that he is somehow ideologically different from other Neo-fascists just because he lives in a fantasy world.

Author

The First Order is a (lame) parody of fascism. The Empire was modeled about both nazi and communist dictatorships. OT (and even the PT) had a subtitly which is nowhere to be found in the silly ST (Rebels included) when it comes to politics.

Seems like we are trying to thread the needle with fine points about this movie and it’s characrers and somehow wound up defending explicit misogyny in the process.

I’m not outraged by this edit. Indeed, I chuckled at the idea, perceiving the inherent joke and enjoying the dig at the people who brought us TLJ. The edit itself is a ‘television hour’-length parody, though whether of the movie or of its detractors isn’t easy to tell. Either way, it seemed mean-spirited to me as I flipped through it briefly.

My point is, it’s fine in my book to get a laugh out of this, but it’s no cause to defend actual misogyny in the world. We get enough of that irrational thought in politics.

What I DID unequivocally enjoy, however, is the subsequent 15-minutes ‘Androgenous Cut,’ featuring no humans at all.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I mostly agree, but I don’t think anyone here was defending misogyny, on this very forum (and I don’t think that actual mysogynists would care about SW anyway: until the Disney movies, there weren’t that much women in SW movies-series but they always were strong characters : Leia, Mothma, Padmé, Ahsoka, ShaaK Ti, Sabine… and now Rey, Jyn, Rose, Holdo and, my favorite from the Disney Era, Hera Syndulla). Some old SW fans might not be happy with the way the new movies are made, but it was expected from a studio that delivered Frozen, Hannah Montana and so on over the last decade… Disney is girly-oriented, so are the new SW movies… just deal with it (I personally just wish that they wouldn’t forget to make good characters, male or female… General Hux, seriously, I still can’t believe this guy… not even mentioning Phasma, such a waste of a very competent actress).

There’s ways to do this without being shitty about it.

I don’t chuckle at anything that expresses misogynistic viewpoints, no matter how serious it is meant to be.

Most misogynists are not “actual misogynist” by your definition. The OT has basically one speaking female character of any significance throughout the whole thing. Your average misogynist is gonna love that, and it’s reflected in the absolute cacophony of complaints about Rey.

It’s like saying racists wouldn’t like Star Wars because Lando was in it. If these people were that discriminating (ha) there would be nothing for them to watch. You’re talking about the absolute extreme misogynists, not the average ones (who are still very bad people).

(by the way I meant Satine, not Sabine…)

(you know… Obi’s former girlfriend who happens to rule over Mandalore… interesting character)

I guess what Mala is saying is that in-universe there is no explicit sexism. Nobody judges or expects anything different from a woman simply because she’s a woman. We see women occupying the same position as men, and higher positions several times.

However, off-screen is pretty clear that something isn’t right when out of 100 characters in the OT literally 3 are women. I don’t think that’s something defendable.

Star Wars has always been about the diverse rebels versus the white male bad guys, and it’s so funny to see people take their frustration with the plot on “the Chinese chick” and the diversity. I completely agree with you- everyone knows that Disney appeals to as many audiences as possible, and people that are shocked that the cast is more diverse than in previous films are way behind

Also, I don’t understand how having the major points of the plot rest on female characters makes the film “SJW”. Just because main characters are female and said female characters actually play a part in the plot, and not just to be women on screen, doesn’t mean that social justice narrative is being preached

No offense, kid, but I don’t think you know how to boil water.
