I debated about this for quite a while, but I think I’ve finally decided on my rankings…

  1. Star Wars
  2. The Empire Strikes Back
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. The Force Awakens
  5. Rogue One
  6. The Last Jedi
  7. The Battle for Endor
  8. Caravan of Courage
  9. The Phantom Menace
  10. Revenge of the Sith
  11. The Star Wars Holiday Special
  12. Attack of the Clones

This was actually tougher than I thought. From 3 to 6 changed positions several times before I settled on this.

That’s harsh, putting anything below the Holiday Special. But really, I can see why people don’t like AOTC. It had some really cool scenes which belong in the Star Wars story, but on the whole was just not that good. Those cool scenes would include Mace in action on Geonosis, and pretty much everything Jango Fett.

But on to my ranking:

  1. ANH
  2. ESB
  3. ROTJ
  4. ROTS
  5. R1
  6. AOTC
  7. TPM

That’s it. As far as I’m concerned, there aren’t any other movies. We’ll see how Han Solo is, and if it deserves a place in the Star Wars mythology.

  9. Attack of the Clones

Okay so it was an odd thing to say. You’re all missing the big picture, which is that Disney is ruining star wars.

Gonna knock ROTS to the bottom spot after rewatching the unedited blu-rays. Holy shit it’s so boring. The Padme/Anakin scenes are 20x worse in this movie than in the last one! George Lucas really should have gotten a script editor instead of waiting until 3 months before shooting to actually finish the fucking script.

Clones had its moments (the Obi-Wan stuff is semi-interesting and the arena sequence is fun) and Phantom Menace feels like there was some heart put into it. Sith feels so sterile.

I guess that’s what you get with a trilogy of movies with the sole purpose of selling toys.

Updated list:

ESB
ANH
TLJ
ROTJ
TFA
TPM
RO
AOTC
ROTS

THANK YOU. Everything people like to dump on in Clones is turned up to 11 in Sith.

The more I think about some stuff the more the rank changes.

The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars
Return of the Jedi
Rogue One
The Last Jedi
The Force Awakens
Revenge of the Sith
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones

I think this should be my definitive ranking for a while.

I haven’t seen Hal’s version but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen more PT edits than anyone, and nothing can be done to any prequel to pull it out of the bottom three.

I agree that even in edits they are still in the bottom three but the gap gets shorter and they at least become enjoyable.

This.

I do really like theatrical RotS.

While I don’t, I will say I like an edited ROTS more than the SE of Return of the Jedi

Also this.

And I don’t think it’s odd at all to say. You like Hal’s post-theatrical edit of ROTS better than George’s post-theatrical edit(s) of ROTJ. And I agree.

SW/Empire
TLJ
TFA/ROTJ

So having just watched Star Wars for the first time in more than a year, I have to retool this:

SW
Empire
TLJ
TFA/ROTJ

Empire might be a more complex and technically perfect movie, but no ten minutes of cinema puts a wider smile on my face than every moment of Star Wars after Ben tells Luke to “use the Force” and turn off his computer. Makes me feel like I’m a kid again. That’s worth five movies as good as The Empire Strikes Back.

Can’t argue with that.

One. Star Wars
Two. The Empire Strikes Back (#1 and #2 are extremely close though. It’s almost a tie.)
Three. Return of the Jedi
Four. The Force Awakens
Tie. Rogue One (I can’t pick between these two yet, very different strengths, very different weaknesses.)
Six. The Phantom Menace
Seven. The Last Jedi (#6 and #7 are also extremely close, and also hard to compare.)
Eight. Attack of the Clones
Tie. Revenge of the Sith (I can’t pick between these two. Both are completely bottom of the barrel.)

So basically AotC, RotS and TLJ are almost tied?

No, I made a typo. I’ll fix it. Thanks.

For all my problems with TLJ, it was significantly better that AotC and RotS IMO.

Edit: Upon further review, I said tit right. TLJ is basically tied with TPM. Both are better than AotC and RotS.

Edit2: OK. It’s a formatting issue of some kind. The numbers appear one way in edit mode and another way when posted. Maybe I need to take out the T’s.

Edit3: OK. Just figured out it will not let me skip numbers in a list. Where I put a 6 it changed it to 5 because that was the next number after 4. I had to spell the numbers out.

It’s funny you don’t like that much TCW tv series and yet you give such a high rank to Rebels. Both tv series share more or less the same strength and the same weaknesses (except that TCW is better made than Rebels which looks kinda cheap).

(and I also get that by your book The Holiday Special is almost as good as the OT ?)

I think Rebels not only looks better than Clone Wars, but is better written. The Holiday Special is one of those rare instances of something being so bad it;s good. It’s definitely one of a kind.

I think the “angular” aspect of the characters in CG Clone Wars was strange at first but in the end worked better for me than the “muppet” aspect of Rebels (the CG also got better and better all along the seasons). The work on the colors and the lightning also was amazing. (rebels have the advantage to have nice backgrounds inspired by Ian Macquarrie but it’s not enough to make it look better to me).

The stories were also more diverse and a lot crazier than most of the episodes of Rebels where you just follow a band of rebels in a ship doing mission after mission that just lead them to be in contact with the rebellion. It’s nice and all, but Clone Wars had a fucking planet set in another spacetime where lives a “father” figure that keeps the balance of the Force in order…
We visit the home world of the Sith, where Yoda meets the ghost of Darth Bane…
We have episodes with Tarkin and Ackbar on Mon Calamary, we have trilogies of Episodes about Obi-Wan’s romance or about the war, we have Episodes for kids, we have Episodes centered on the bad guys, on the underground world, etc…
There are also interesting things in Rebels like the Bendu character and some others things, but CW was just more interesting overall, even if I can understand that it could be seen as sometimes too crazy.
As a dude who grew up with the OT I should prefer Rebels, but nope. The Clone Wars, even with its prequels world, was simply more entertaining to me.
