Why is it so hard to discuss the legitimate question of Rey’s abilities without using an offensive term to do it?

Because there’s nothing inherently offensive about it! I’m sorry, Frink, but I really strongly disagree on this one.

Given how many times these threads fly off the rails into a an oil tanker conveniently parked nearby when it’s used, you could have fooled me. It’s just has way too much baggage attached to it now. We’re simply better off without using it.

And as Jay said in another thread recently…

Please respect the OP and keep personal attacks and politics out of this thread. The whole “Mary Sue” argument in regards to Rey has been beaten to death.

The heckler’s veto is a thing, but there is no desire to make your job difficult, Wook.

A question nagging me, maybe somebody noticed/remembers: did Luke already have his exposed robotic hand in a flashback standing over Kylo? As a Force projection, did Luke have the robot hand or flesh?

He had the exposed robo-hand in the flashback. In the projection, he had either the same glove he wore throughout the movie or a close looking one. It was more brown than black.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Thanks. I had initially thought his robo-hand was stripped away when the hut was collapsed down on him. But we don’t actually know why. Another reason not to like the movie 😛

After a rewatch, my opinion of the film still holds. Absolutely excellent.

But still, that horse scene, amirite?

I think I pinned it down to the motion of those horses. They move do unnaturaly to me — a way that’s indicative of early 2000s CGI. Also, the whole way the scene was “shot” looked very Lucas-like.

A youtube video that even a TV’s Frink might love: “Top 10 Worst Reasons You Hated The Last Jedi”. I recommend her other videos if you like dry sarcastic humor.

Lasted about a minute. -10 points for being 22 minutes long, +1 points for the giant porg pillow. Final score 1/10.

Your math is off. -10 + 1 = -9, not 1.

I said -10 points, meaning it lost 10 points. It started at 10/10 and lost 10 points for being 22 minutes long. Then it gained one back for porg pillow.

RLM guys talk Last Jedi in latest video, less than a minute spent on it! Very relevant.

Another article trying explain away some fans’ critisms:

https://makingstarwars.net/2018/01/around-the-galaxy-lukes-destiny-discussed/

Apparently the negative opinions are all biased by expectations and such, which then implies that positive opinions are objective?

Why can’t people just stick with explaining why they like or dislike a film, rather than lumping people together in a vain attempt to discredit the opposite side?

Great question. Of course we don’t only see this in film discussions. I think there are lots of reasons. When one is convinced of a certain point of view there is a natural tendency to focus on the weaker arguments of the other side. They’re easier to deal with and confirm the rightness of one’s own point of view. Sometimes bad arguments are made by people with good reasons that they don’t know how to express very well. But that then colors how better arguments are viewed, seemingly tainted by the same bad objections.

There is also the fact that this thing has importance to the people discussing it (see the RLM video clip). So there is a part of people that may feel personally affronted if others don’t share their view. These are obviously generalizations but I think explains why we see some strong views on both sides trying to discredit the other.

Can we talk about saber effects for a second, I liked how they looked more in TFA. Here the original blade is weirdly pointed and too clean? Sounds might have been better too, but I can’t verify.

I definitely preferred the sound mix in TLJ than in TFA. Not even a question. Visual effects too, but the one scene where Luke is fishing (where he jumps and grabs that huge stick over the water) looked pretty fake to me. And of course the cgi horses looked very bad to me too.

Lightsabers looked too much like they were actually there - reminded me of a lightsaber toy or replica in some shots. TFA’s sabers were definitely better for me. And the screen wipes were either out of place or too fast.

Overall I really loved how the movie looked and sounded though, a lot more than TFA.

Regarding lightsabers however, TFA > TLJ.

Sure visually in terms of colours and shot composition it was far more interesting overall.
