You came this close to Qui Gon being in the end of ROTJ... — Page 2

Commande Courage,

that would be interesting to see, but as an 'Alternate Ending'

the one point im unclear on however is the last two points. At first it seemed to flow like how it would work on screen. but then the last two points, if not just a recap of the scene, dont fit because you have old - fade to new - add padme/qui-gon - back to old missing the characters that were just added - then back to new.

but if you cut those last two lines I think it could flow nicely as a nice alternate ending.

Why Anakin really turned to the dark side:
"Anakin, You're father I am" - Yoda
"No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!" - Anakin

by "The original final shot of the OT characters" I think he means the group shot of Luke, Leia Han, Lando, Chewie and the droids.

ahh, gotcha, that would make sense.

Since the Force Immortality of Jedi is central to the destruction of the emperor, I felt like I needed some explanation for it. It's not a standard force power like jumping far or even lightening, it's something only Jedi can do, and even then only certain Jedi. And the Jedi must learn the trick, although it appears that force strength is also important. So maybe Lucas could have spent a few seconds on the trick at the expense of that pointless special effects thrill ride at the beginning of the movie.

Actually, no one possessed this power until Lucas was filming the end of ANH. Ben was originally supposed to survive ANH, but his character did nothing after leaving the DS, so Lucas killed him off. The "Ghost" stuff came later.

Guinness was not too happy about this change, I might add.

Not really. Guiness was more than happy to be killed off. He was the one who insisted.

I just started reading Heir to the Empire for the first time since 5th grade, and this is how that 1991 book explained why Ben was a ghost:

(Luke was) asleep in his suite in the Imperial Palace, and dreaming of Ben Kenobi.

"No, I'm not a dream," Ben assured him, answering Luke's unspoken thought. "But the distances separating us have become too great for me to appear to you in any other way. Now, even this last path is being closed to me."

"No," Luke heard himself say. "You can't leave us, Ben. We need you."

Ben's eyebrows lifted slightly, and a glimpse of his old smile touched his lips. "You don't need me, Luke. You are a Jedi, strong in the Force." His smile faded and for a moment his eyes seemed to focus on something Luke couldn't see. "At any rate," he added quietly, "the decision is not mine to make. I have lingered too long already, and can no longer postpone my journey from this life to what lies beyond."

So, according to that book (although I know it's not canon, it's far more enjoyable than the prequels), the Force ghosts are similar to our perception of regular ghosts in that they have a strong will to continue to live. It goes without saying that Force training is required to attain that state. But as far as the "immortality" that Yoda is talking about in Revenge of the Sith, well, that's just not the kind of idea that Timothy Zahn had, as even Ben could only hover between worlds for less than a decade after his death before moving on completely.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

well if you think about it, how long would you stick around for if you had nothing to do. a person can only go for so long. it seems that in that conversation ben knows that luke doesnt need him anymore, so there was no point of sticking around any longer. only makes sense to me.

Yeah, he tells Luke that Luke no longer needs him, but he also says that the decision is not his to make, which means that he doesn't have a choice to stay or not to stay.

i think he means that at some point he will have to leave. so it is enevitablely, he can stay as long as he wants but eventually he will have to go.

Sorry, Shimraa, I'm not exactly sure what you mean. How can he stay as long as he wants if at some point he will have to leave?

i cant explain it anymore then i have, but ill try.

ok right now he is stuck between life and the after life. he can stay there as long as he wants but at some point he will have to go the the afterlife because there is no reason to stay in between. its like being in denial. you can deny something for as long as you want but in the end you'll have to come to terms with it.
Author

Okay, thanks, that was a lot clearer that time, and it kinda goes along with what I said about the reason he was a ghost in the first place was because he had a strong desire to stay behind. Yeah, I can see how what you said would make sense.

Not for the reason you imply. He disliked that his newfound popularity was due mainly to this sci-fi cult film, rather than his earlier, and rather spectacular, body of work.

Yeah, I'm sure that today, most people remember him for his work on Star Wars, and it could get rather frustrating to be typecast as Obi-Wan Kenobi for the rest of your life.

Yeah, but I don't think Alec Guiness would have ever had that problem. He made alot of great films in the US and the UK before Star Wars. It'd be like saying Liam Neeson will always be typcast as Qui Gonn or Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan.

if Qui-Gonn taught Yoda and Obi-wan while they were still alive, who taught Anikan? or did he work it out for himself after he died the same way that Qui-gonn did?

Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor are on the peak of their carreers right now, so they won't be typecasted. With Alec Guiness, all his major work was done before SW and he was unknown to younger audiences. Mark Hammil had no carreer before SW, so he got that Luke Skywalker image he couldn't (and still can't) shake off. Fortunally, Mark Hammil knows how to deal with it.
