How do you sort your movies?

I’m curious to see what everyone here does with their discs and tapes. Do you alphabetize them by title? What do you do about series? Do you seperate your collections by format (DVDs in one place, Blu-Rays in another)? If you have Criterion discs, do you seperate them from the rest of your collection? What about TV series collections?

TV - Separate, Alpha by title.
Movies - Alpha by title, but series grouped together. Hobbit and LOTR are all in one group, for instance, under H. LOTR comes after Hobbit just like OT comes after PT.
Format - Mixed. Used to separate Blu at first but have so many of each now there’s not much point.
Criterion - I think I have one (Rushmore?) so not an issue.

Interesting thread idea, even if you didn’t ask first. 😉

JEDIT: You didn’t ask about fanedits. For replacements (like Matrix sequels) my favorite versions replace the original in the original case on the shelf. The original discs go in storage in a spindle. Other fanedits (like additional Matrix sequels that aren’t my favorite, or njvc’s Pulp Empire that can’t replace the original) go in a spindle but in an easily accessible location that isn’t the main movie/tv shelving.

In most cases, organized by director/creator. Within that director’s section, organized chronologically. TV series are mixed in (chronologically by the start of the series). Blu-rays and DVDs are mixed together. Criterion is mixed in.

That said, there are some movies that get lumped together even though they have different directors. The Star Wars trilogy goes together under “L”. The Studio Ghibli films go together under “M”. Sequels are put together even if there are unrelated one-offs in between, so the whole Star Wars trilogy goes first, then the Holiday Special is after.

It’s a really logical system… for me. The downside is that the rest of the family never knows where to put the movies back – “Dad, I’m trying to put back The Empire Strikes Back but I can’t find the ‘T’ section!” Which is fine because I’d rather do it anyway.

Used to do alphabetical by title (with series grouped together). When I started getting blu-rays they were separate and organized pretty loosely, mostly by director.

I just moved so most of my movies are either in storage and/or at my parents, so I only have about two shelves worth right now. I’ve just been doing straight up chronological, blu-rays and DVDs together. I kinda like it.

Cool. I like the thought processes that go into this.

I sorth them the correct way, however: alphabetical by gaffer.

Just kidding. For my movies, I currently seperate Blus from DVDs and have them in seperate drawers, alphabetized by title (Star Wars Blus in S but in timeline order starting with R1). My TV series sets are a bit of a mess, though. They’re in the drawer with the DVDs, so I have my Star Wars: Rebels Blu-Rays next to my OT Despecialized DVDs, for example. My Criterion Blus are mixed in with the rest of my movies, but as I collect more of them, I may seperate them.

However I can, because living in my parents’ house means I’m rapidly running out of space.

They’re all mixed together madly. Some by label, some by studio, some by genre, some by director, then chronologically, and others by loosely being related to one another (Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, and Alien/Aliens being a part of the “80s Sci-fi franchises” section).

Physical:

DVDs, Blu-Rays, and the two UHD Blu-Rays I have are all mixed together. Video games are separate, and those are further separated by console (PS3 vs PS4 - if the PS4 was backwards compatible I’d mix them the way my movies are).

Alphabetical by title, including TV shows. Series are grouped together, alphabetized based on the “series title” (that is, the Bond movies are under “J” for “James Bond,” the Hobbit and LOTR movies are under “M” for “Middle-Earth,” and then you have your “standard” ones like the Bourne movies under “B”).

Digital:

I rip all my movies and put them on KDLinks HD720 media player (with a 6TB HDD inside). Movies and TV shows are in separate folders.

Movies in a series are labeled like this:

Marvel (01) (Iron Man)

Or:

Star Wars (04) (A New Hope)

That way the series all stay together. Remakes have the year in parentheses, and anything that isn’t the original theatrical cut has that in parentheses as well - so, “Blade Runner” is now “Blade Runner (01) (Blade Runner) (Final Cut)”.

TV shows are broken down into season folders within the series folder, with the year of each season being in front. Movies that are part of a TV show’s continuity are in the show’s folder within its own folder. So X-Files, for instance, goes:

1997-98 - Season 5
1998 - Fight the Future
1998-99 - Season 6

And so on.

I use numbers instead of years for the season folders if necessary (like my Clone Wars folder, which is in chronological order rather than broadcast order).

I think that’s about it…

In piles. Sometimes with leftover food on/ between them.

Some stacked on the player, some stacked on top of the neat row on the shelf.

Some in the corner gathering dust.

Most of them are in cases. And most of those are in the correct cases.

Sometimes I write short limericks on post-it notes and put those in the cases instead of the disc. Mostly as a joke to the people who borrow my movies. They love it.

Oh, and I keep tv series separate of course, I am a bit of a neat freak after all.

I’ve just got all of them together but organized by TV and movie (except Star Trek, that all goes together).

Oh yeah I didn’t even notice that.

I group my TV-related media by:
Games/Videos
Console/Movie/TV
Format (BD/DVD)
Series/Standalone

Then sort them alphabetically.

I don’t generally touch them though once they’re organized, because I’m much more likely to make use of a digital backup copy rather than bother with physical media.

My DVDs aren’t really sorted at all, I just put them in the shelf however I like it, but for my BluRays, I started to sort them chronologically, with sequels and movies by the same director grouped together. For example, Blade Runner comes after Alien and only then comes Blues Brothers. I don’t have that many BluRays, though.

Order of preference/genre. I keep my favorite films furthest to the right where they’re easier to reach from the shelf.

Alphabetical by title, generally. Titles beginning with numbers are before “A”. Series are together and in order. So, all of the Bond films are next to each other in release order instead of all over the place and The Road Warrior is next to Mad Max instead of under “R”. When the name of the series is different from the name of the first film, I put it under the series name, so the LOTR films are under “L”, not “F”, and the aforementioned Bond films are under “J” for James Bond and not “D” for Dr. No. For Star Wars, I’ve got official releases first, so it’s the GOUT DVDs, then the PT blu-rays, then the OT blu-rays, then the Despecialized blu-rays, then the Holiday Special. For Star Trek, I’ve got the TOS movie blu-ray set, then the Wrath of Khan remasterd blu-ray, then the 2009 Abrams film. I’ve got all of my Criterion discs on their own shelf organized by spine number.

How many Criterion titles do you have? I have 7 (well, 9 because one’s a trilogy set), which I didn’t feel was enough to justify segregating them from the rest of my movies.

I’ve got 22. I only decided to put them on their own shelf about a month ago when the six I ordered from that Barnes & Noble sale arrived.

Damn I’m slacking with 5 (or 6 if you count The Rock). There’s a lot that I want to get though.
