I have the first ever TCM airing of this on SP VHS apparently, according to Osborne in the intro. Maybe I do have the theatrical cut. Any scenes which would immediately stick out? I’ve never seen the film before.
You’ll know.
Yeah, we got hosed. Ben Mankiewicz owes us an apology. 😉
I don’t recall seeing the copyright after the end credits before though.
Where were you in '77?
Did TCM EVER show the theatrical cut, or has it always been the SE? I think I have an SP VHS recording of an older TCM airing buried someplace, but I don’t know if I was old enough to even notice which cut it was.
“What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one.”

Some people have reported it airing prior to 2004.

Huh. Then I think I may have it. I’ll check.

If the Albino lizard doesn’t have wings and antennae, it’s theatrical.

Is this project still alive?
Luke astro-projects himself to Salt Lake Planet, gets shot at by gorilla walkers, has a non-lightsaber duel with Darth Millennial, then dies of a broken heart, inspiring broom boys throughout the galaxy to get creative with their sweeping. - DuracellEnergizer
Yes. Most of the people involved have other things taking priority at the moment.

My VHS of the first-ever TCM airing has the green opening text, the red WB logo, etc. Looks like it was the DC even back then. Shame on TCM, showing something like that goes against their entire manifesto. Short of this project ever finishing, looks like I’ll never see the theatrical cut. And thus never see this movie. What a fucking shame.

Okay just wondering. I’d defiantly be willing to donate what I can when this is picked back up. I can’t wait to see this film. I have the 2004 DVD but have yet to watch it because I’d like to see the Theatrical Cut first.

Did you look past that point just to be sure? The lizard shot isn’t that far in.

I was going by the movie-censorship.com list of changes. I’ll check the lizard, but it did have the color-change on the monitors, so I’m pretty sure.

Here’s a youtube video on the comparisons between the theatrical cut and the Director’s cut:

You can pick up a VHS copy pretty cheap on eBay.

Yeah, but panned-and-scanned, right?

Yeah, and probably badly scanned at that. The early Betamax copy I have pans over to the left side of the frame at the end totally chopping off the credits. I think the telecine operator was off having a smoke.

Damn. I really would like to see the original cut in widescreen and all. Maybe when this project finishes 😉.
EDIT: Why are there two versions of the film on Vudu? They’re both listed as having the same run-time of the director’s cut. Weird.
EDIT 2: Amazon Instant video does the same thing.

You could pick up the Laserdisc and a player, but that can get spendy.
Anyone know anything about the Amazon/Vudu versions? The idea the original version coming out under our noses sounds way too good to be true.

Isn’t the work in progress Grindhouse version still floating around?

Yes, it’s on myspleen. 720p and has Laserdisc frames replacing the missing ones.
I still have a small stack of LD captures I did back before anyone dreamed we could get our hands on a print. How far we’ve come!

I checked with Amazon Instant Video, sadly, in spite of what they list, the so-called 1971 version is in fact the 2004 cut. I knew it was too good to be true 😦.
Apparently I just will never see it.

Yeah, but with no more invites, you can’t get onto that 😉.

Yep. Still thought it was worth mentioning given how many people here have accounts.😃
