Personally I think all of the storytelling problems in the ST come from the First Order. The enemy should have been a legion of extragalactic invaders.
The old Marvel comic actually resorted to that in the lean post ROTJ years. The Rebellion and the remnants of the Empire had to join forces to save the Galaxy.
