"(For the record, I don't see any smearing on either Faces or the DC with my 925.)"
Nor do I from my 704. Then again, it's been a looooooooong time since I've watched either at full speed. [Firefly] "Does that seem right to you?" [/Firefly]
I've read a few places that the 704 is a notorious smearer. See page 24 of Zion's project thread. There are smearing caps of the faces set from his 704. Also in that thread (page 21) are smearing caps from Karyudo. It's just listed as "US" so I'm not sure which set that comes from or what player. His Japanese caps look much better. Aside from the better black level (which is because of Japan's 0 IRE standard), there is no smearing. Are these CAV discs?
"This is on my player, though, Which smears pretty noticably with CLV discs and not at all with CAV discs."
Again showing it's more of a player problem than a transfer problem.
I don't disagree, my opinion is also that the smear comes from the way a player handles the CLV format. But the reason really means nothing to me, in the end it's which one looks best to me on my setup. But since this is the X0 thread and it doesn't seem to smear, it's a non-issue for this set. Though, I have never seen a CAV vs CLV comparison, so it's still possible that while the X0 handles CLV much better than your usual player, it may also handle CAV even better.
[EDIT]
I might also point out that the Def. Col. has a long list of several documented problems in every print and reprint, whereas the Faces set has very few (that I'm aware of.)
I've read over that list and the only few flaws not fixed in the very latest pressing are very minor to me and usually I couldn't even find them. I don't think it can be said that one set is w/o question better than the other. Everyone has their preference and mine is the DC set. If I had a X0, I may like the faces set better.
